For example, fire arising from grass, arising from leaves, and being bright, large, small, etc., their individual forms cannot be definitely ascertained. They cannot be definitely ascertained, yet it is merely the existence of fire. From related phenomena, from signs possessing concomitance and counter-concomitance, for the subject possessing that sign, the dharma to be proven, whatever cognition arises, that is inference. The term "arising from the subject" indicates the connection with the subject. The term "related" indicates concomitance and counter-concomitance. From a sign with three characteristics, for a hidden meaning, the cognition of the general essence is also inference, the accomplisher of those hidden meanings that are the cause of inference is solely inference. This shows that there is no cognition other than inference. Because if that were the case, then the cognition of one's own essence would be direct perception. If the aforementioned sign exists, then all other hidden meanings should be proven through inference, because it is impossible to cognize them in any other way. Therefore, apart from direct perception and hidden things, there is no other object of measurement. What could accomplish anything else? By what could there be even a slight difference in a means of knowing other than inference? Therefore, by the two objects of measurement themselves, two means of knowing are established. The direct perception of the essence of one's own object is the means of knowing of direct perception, and the cognition of the hidden, aforementioned other aspects is inference, therefore there are only two means of knowing. Because two objects of measurement are seen. Namely, one's own characteristic and the other, because two objects of measurement are shown. The numbers three and one are refuted, by showing two objects of measurement, three means of knowing and so on are refuted, and one means of knowing is refuted, and the teacher also explained that there is a means of knowing that is not direct perception. Because there is no other third object of measurement, there are no three means of knowing and so on. Even if it changes like that, if it does not exist, then the object of measurement itself is not singular, because only the hidden meaning other than direct perception changes.

The matter of the next world, etc., does not exist solely. Then why is that? Because it is non-existence, and because of non-existence, it is not measurable. Because it is not measurable, the directly perceived object is the only measurable. The proposition is that whatever does not exist is measurable, like a rabbit's horn, etc. To say that the general is also non-existent, I think this is the appearance of contradictory pervasion. I also think so. That is what we also think. Measurable is established as two types. From its own characteristic, other measurable in general does not exist, in that case, it is proving what has already been proven. For the thing to be proven that non-existence itself is not measurable, it is an uncertain reason. Like this, even if another valid cognition is used to ascertain that there is no next world, that is also because it does not go beyond the measurable itself, so it cannot be ascertained by itself. If it is not like that, then when there is no valid cognition with the object of no next world etc., the non-existence of the next world etc. is not determined by its own aspect. Even if there is no determination on that, but if it can still generate understanding on that, can dream, then there is also a determination of non-existence on that. Therefore, if there is a determination on that, then, whatever is the determination of non-existence, that is the two valid cognitions. The other valid cognition called inference will naturally transform. Therefore, if non-existence is measurable, then, for example, it becomes empty of what is to be proven. The proposition is also that whatever is determined by one aspect, that is what the valid cognition should fully examine, like the directly perceived object. To say that non-existence is also to be determined by one aspect is the reason of nature. If it transforms like that, then, if it is established from the directly perceived itself that there is no next world and no person etc., then there is no second valid cognition, if you ask like that, that is because for non-existence, it is not sense consciousness. Non-existence is not established from the directly perceived. Why is that? Because the consciousness born from the sense is born from the power of the object. Because it is thought that non-existence is established from the directly perceived, it becomes showing that it is with non-existence as the object.
