Furthermore, sound itself is not what is to be expressed, because the senses, etc., are with results. If it is said that form, which has no function in reality, is because it is apprehended by the consciousness arising from the sound of form, etc. Even those without senses can see form, etc., from sound, then the senses are of no use whatsoever. But this is not the case, as the senses are meaningful. Therefore, the consciousness of the object of the senses appears similar, but the consciousness arising from sound does not have it, so there is no such thing as the same object. Whatever does not appear in the consciousness produced by sound is not what sound can express, which is not logical. The argument is: if a certain consciousness does not become a manifestation similar to the object, then it will not become the same as that object. For example, the consciousness of cloth that does not appear similar to the object like the consciousness of a pot. The consciousness arising from sound will also not become similar to the consciousness of the object of the senses, which is an unobservable pervasion. Although it can be transformed in this way, it is actually desired that form, etc., are not what is to be expressed. What is it then? If it is said that names and signs are different from the aspect of consciousness and do not possess similarity, then the name of its fabrication is what is to be expressed. If this is the case, and names, etc., are what is to be expressed, then acknowledge it. Names, etc., are the speaker, the listener, or related to the meaning to be expressed, or not related to any of these three, if this is the case, names, etc., the speaker, the listener expressing subsequent relations, names, etc., without relations, will become such discriminations. For the time being, names and signs related to the speaker and the listener are what is to be expressed, then, for external things that do real work, the sound of the expresser of names and signs related to the speaker and the listener, the listener will not intervene. Why? Because it is not expressed. The sound of the state of the expresser of names, etc.

The meaning that exists in the external realm is not expressed. Regarding not expressing, it is not the reason for understanding arising from that sound. For example, when speaking of a cow, it is not like understanding a horse from the sound of a cow. The connection is that whatever is not expressed by a sound, it is not understanding that from that sound, just as understanding felt from the sound of a pot. Furthermore, regarding the meaning of the ability to perform the function of holding water and so on, and the names and signs related to the speaker and listener, in the manner of expressing, the sound should not be expressed, which is called the manifestation of contradictory pervasiveness. Although it transforms in this way, whatever the meaning of the external realm is, and whatever the names and signs are, for those who show them in a way that clings to oneness, and the things to be shown, are used as terms. Among them, the meaning of the sound that clings to oneness transforms here: will the meaning of the external realm and the names and signs, etc., transform into the same nature? Or, for the meaning, will the names and signs, etc., or for the names and signs, etc., will the meaning be attached? If only this conceptual thought of mutual attachment transforms, for that which transforms into the same nature, if it cannot show the meaning of the external realm itself, then it will not transform into names and signs. At that time, because the meaning of the external realm is understood from the sound, the senses will not become fruitful, or the occasion for expressing names, etc., will disappear. For the second case, because the meaning itself is mainly shown there, the names and signs are also understood as being secondary and additional, in that case, it is the state of the senses being without fruit itself. When the meaning is attached to names, etc., the names and signs will be mainly understood, and the benefit of the meaning will not be understood. In that case, then the meaning will not be understood, for example, for a person with the ability of a king, when it is said that this person is like a king, when the king is attached, it is not through his expression that he becomes a king, but like "just that." For mutual attachment, also depending on the situation, the senses will become without fruit and understanding.
