This is to show that it is not that I myself have examined and then separately established it. Therefore, it is also explained in the Dharmapada. For the time being, because what is shown by the direct perception can be seen, therefore this is a valid reason. If someone asks: Here, inference is not shown, how is it established? Because inference is also irreversible. Whatever is unreasonable is what those who want to benefit should eliminate. The Blessed One has never denied that inference is not a valid means of knowledge at any time, therefore, because it is not denied, it should be considered to have reason. Aren't other characteristics of inference also not denied? If so, then should those also be accepted? It is not like that, because the combination of this is seen. Is the combination of this inference seen, or is this inference of the Blessed One seen? The meaning is that the Blessed One showed inference. How is it shown? Like this: Slightly having the nature of arising, having arising, all those are of the nature of cessation, momentary. Etc., with the sound of "etc.", it is for the sake of fully showing various characteristics of inference. As it is said, then, how is it said to be the characteristic of inference? Answer: The sign is the basis of inference. Where is the sign? What kind of sign? Answer: Having the characteristic of not arising without it. Where does the characteristic of not arising without it exist? If it exists, then connect the words. Like that, not arising without it is the nature of the sign. Whatever has a slight nature of arising, all those are of the nature of cessation, etc. Because of showing the pervasion. The Blessed One said: Not arising without it. That is also clearly explained. The reason is: For the nature of arising, etc., the nature of cessation, etc., which one wants to establish oneself, and because of showing not arising without it. Like this, the characteristic of inference is spoken and shown. The Blessed One first spoke of the reality of valid means of knowledge. In the commentary on the Pramāṇavārttika, the second chapter on the establishment of valid means of knowledge. Commentary on the Pramāṇavārttika.

Chapter Twenty-Two. The reason why the teacher explained the treatise on the nature of valid cognition is the previous detailed explanation of inference, and the latter half of the verse of salutation at the beginning of the treatise spoken by the teacher is easy to understand, so the explanation of the former half is completed. Now, in order to explain the nature of valid cognition, the verses beginning with "Because there are two objects to be measured" were composed. There are four kinds of mistaken understandings about valid cognition and its nature treatise, namely: mistaken understanding of number, mistaken understanding of nature, mistaken understanding of scope, and mistaken understanding of result. Among them, in order to eliminate the mistaken understanding of number, it is said, "Because there are two objects to be measured, there are two valid cognitions." Because it measures, it is valid cognition. Moreover, there are only two kinds of valid cognition. This prevents valid cognition from being one or three, etc. It is not one, because the inference to be explained will show itself as valid cognition. If it is said that when explaining the nature of valid cognition, it is meaningless to explain number, etc., it is not so, because it is to make the nature completely pure. For direct perception and inference, the nature of non-deception is the same. When it is necessary to express it, if there is no other nature different from it, then how can they be expressed with one nature? Therefore, it cannot be expressed with one nature. If it is expressed from the perspective of classification, the classification of nature can be expressed, so the number is expressed. The expression of the scope is also the same. When grasping a non-scope becomes valid cognition, if it is deceived, then similarly, for its own scope, it will become a non-valid cognition of the knower, so the scope is expressed. When it is not expressed that the result of valid cognition is not another meaning from valid cognition, then the result must be the nature of realizing the meaning, otherwise the result will be unreasonable. Therefore, the nature of realization is the result. Therefore, whoever
