Because existence and non-existence cannot be established. The nature of direct perception and inference, where the time and place cannot be determined, is the cause of doubt, because even if the valid cognition is established incorrectly, it cannot be established without meaning. In the treatise called 'The Drop of Reasoning,' the second chapter is on inference for one's own benefit. Inference for the sake of others is the statement of a sign with three characteristics, because the result is attributed to the cause. Due to the difference in combination, it is of two kinds: having homogeneity and having heterogeneity. Apart from the difference in combination, there is no difference in meaning between these two. Among them, the one with homogeneity is that whatever becomes an object of perception and is not seen is established in the realm of the name of non-existence, just as seeing a rabbit's horn or something else, like saying that in which directional difference a pot that has become an object of perception is not seen. Similarly, the combination of the reason of nature is that whatever exists is impermanent, like a pot, etc., which is a pure combination of nature. Whatever has birth is impermanent, which is a combination of nature made by the difference of the dharma that has become nature. Whatever is made is impermanent, which is due to the difference of distinction, because in order to establish its own essence, the essence that depends on the action of others is called made. It should also be viewed in the same way for things that have just arisen and have distinctiveness due to differences in causes. The sound of 'exists' or 'has birth' or 'is made' indicates the dharma of the direction. All these proving dharmas should be understood as only the proving dharma and the dharma to be proven are related to each other in what way they establish their own essence, and in reality, that itself is its nature, and nature is also the reason, because if it is established and that is not established, then there is no its nature, and there may also be confusion. The combination of the reason of the effect is that wherever there is smoke, there is fire, like in the kitchen, etc.

Indeed. For example, it is like saying, "There is smoke here." Here, for what is to be proven as the cause, which is established only on the entities of cause and effect, one should state the reason of the effect. The statement with dissimilar dharma nature is that whatever exists and is the object of focus, that will only become the focus. For example, if it is a distinction such as blue, then saying, "Here, the vase that is the object of focus is not perceived in that way," is the statement of non-perception. If there is no impermanence, then it is either existence or having birth, or not being made. Then, sound is either existence or having birth, or it is made. This is called the statement of nature. If there is no fire, then smoke will not arise, but there is smoke here, which is called the statement of the reason of the effect. In reality, through similar dharma nature, one can also realize the dissimilar dharma nature in the statement, because without it, the thing to be proven will not follow the reason. Similarly, through dissimilar dharma nature, one can also realize following, because without it, if the thing to be proven does not exist, the reason will not be established. If there is no connection of nature, then the reversal of one will not necessarily lead to the reversal of the other. Moreover, all of that has two aspects, namely, it is called its own nature and what arises from it. Therefore, the connection should be shown by stating the reversal. Therefore, the words of reversal only summarize the connection, and whatever shows the connection is called following. Therefore, whether it is the gateway of following or the gateway of reversal, by stating only one word, it will also show whether there is or is not a sign in the similar side and the dissimilar side. In this way, there is no need to show the statement with two words. For non-perception, if it is shown that whatever exists and is the object of focus, that will only become the focus, if it is not focused on, then it will be understood that there is no such thing, therefore following is established. For both of these statements, there is also no need to necessarily show the subject, because here, for the statement with similar dharma nature, whatever is the focus as the object of focus, that is the object of the name of non-existence, and here, it is also the object of focus as the object of focus.
