Karma. The root consciousness that grasps the meaning indeterminately grasps together or separately through association with some experiences. Moreover, even when the meaning is closely connected, and also when there is remembrance of the connection of sounds, if it relies on the consciousness of the senses, then that meaning can be determined. Why? Because if, at the time of expression, one does not remember the general aspect of the speech that was habitual, then it is impossible to connect, just like a different sound. Even without the arousal of the inner mental activity caused by the close connection of the meaning, it is not appropriate to remember the distinction of the sound, because if it were not caused by that, then it would follow that the name of that would not be grasped. Therefore, because of the interruption by memory, the immediate result of the close connection of the meaning does not occur. Therefore, whatever was not previously the cause of the arising of consciousness, because it distinguishes the close connection, that also changes later. Because there is no difference in nature, and because there is no difference in ability, it is not possible for one to cause or not cause something for another. Therefore, even if there is no meaning, eye consciousness can arise, because the meaning does not directly connect with consciousness, and because it connects with what is awakened by memory, consciousness is useless, and it does not depend on existence. If the close connection of meaning causes the arising of consciousness, then because there is no interruption of the remembrance of speech, direct perception is established without it. Furthermore, distinction and the distinguished, relationship and worldly customs, if grasped and thus combined, one understands in that way, not otherwise. If one knows the distinction and the distinguished, their relationship, and worldly conventions, then by grasping them together, one grasps something as distinguished, like someone with a stick, and so on. If one does not know the meaning, the relationship, and the scriptures that express them, then it does not happen, so it is not otherwise. Lineage, qualities, and those with functions are impossible here, because different natures and relationships do not appear, so connection is not reasonable, and because there is no such understanding, like water and milk, and so on. For whom there is understanding of difference, there is also grasping, which is caused by the remembrance of symbols, the nature of the collection of seeing, how can eye consciousness, which is empty of grasping before and after, arise? Why?

Because it does not have the ability to do these things, because it is born from the power of the proximity of the object, therefore there is no deliberation. If it itself is deliberation, then the mind consciousness and the sense consciousness would be no different. If there is no difference, then it would lead to the various distinctions of the past, future, and things, as well as grasping and not grasping, inferring and not inferring, and relying and not relying on meaningful things, and so on. If the mind consciousness grasps the manifested aggregate as sense consciousness, that is not correct, because as previously stated, it does not grasp, therefore such understanding is not reasonable. Because it does not involve non-objects, such as types and so on, as well as relations, the past, the terms of sound, and so on, these are not the objects of sense consciousness. Therefore, sense consciousness does not belong to the thoughts that connect meaning. Even if it is taken by thought, The turning back of desire and the proximity of, The wisdom of the object is an independent transformation. Furthermore, if this is initiated by the thought of distinctions and so on, then the entry with a complete collection will also turn back due to desire, just like other discriminations. Discriminations are able to be dispelled by individual examination, but sense consciousness is not, because even in the case of a complete collection, the wisdom of a cow is dispelled and discriminated as a horse, it is still seen as a cow. This will also change from the proximity of the object to being independent, because the discriminations of cows and so on do not change merely from the proximity of the object. If this itself is not other, because saying "this is a cow" will not change to being non-proximate, and our direct perception is also this itself, because it is characterized by the certainty of object proximity, if it is said like that, that is not existent, because for what reason? Because it is not the domain of the senses, For the non-existent and the non-different, From knowledge also wisdom will transform. Because it is a thing that is not the domain of the senses, then what difference is there between it and the non-existence that produces sense consciousness? Its ability is completely different from it, and if connected through the transmission of proximity, then it will also see from the past.
