The Ascertainment of Valid Cognition. Dharmakirti, glorious one. The Ascertainment of Valid Cognition. Dharmakirti, glorious one. The Ascertainment of Valid Cognition. Homage to youthful Manjushri! That which the noble one himself came and took hold of is the glorious one with stainless wisdom. Since the foolish of the world do not understand the firmness of his words, Even if those who rely on and conquer the world, out of ignorance, slightly slander him, But since it gives rise to meaninglessness, I will explain his system with compassion. Benefit and non-benefit, obtaining and abandoning, are necessarily the manifestation of correct knowledge, therefore, this is composed for the purpose of showing it to those who are not skilled. Correct knowledge is of two kinds, namely, direct perception and inference. These, having completely determined the meaning, then engage, therefore, there is no deception in the action of meaning. If there are other valid cognitions, such as those arising from sound and approximate measurement, then what? If it is a valid cognition, then it is included in these two alone. Valid cognition is only of two kinds. The relation is: direct perception is not from another. Because it cognizes the self-nature of similarity. Meaning is only of two kinds, namely, manifest and hidden. Among these, whatever appearance of knowledge accords with the following and reversing of its own nature is direct perception. That is the unique nature of a thing, its own characteristic. Others are not fit to be understood because they are empty of the power to directly establish their own entity in the mind. Seeing one thing and knowing another is not reasonable, because it would be too extensive. If that too is what does not arise without it, then it will change. It is understood as the form that is close to how the form and nature relationship is established, and understanding in a general way from the relationship is also inference, therefore, there are only two valid cognitions. Otherwise, it is not fit to be understood. Its relationship alone is not the definition of a sign. However, it is also seen on the subject that possesses the quality to be apprehended, but that is not present in sound, so how can it be another valid cognition?

Then, if those are seen, what meaning is accomplished or prevented? If it is said that it is remembering what was seen before, then without sound and signs, how can it be remembered? Is there a distinction in this situation? Therefore, in order that these do not accomplish in some cases, or do not accomplish or prevent in some cases, how do they accomplish some cases? Things are not accomplished from those either, because those do not establish a connection there. In order to be able to understand the speaker's manifest intention, therefore, the basis for understanding in this way is that itself. Then, if it exists, it exists, and inferring arising from the invisible and establishing non-existence is not inference, because there is no concomitance. There is no example for this, because there is no other establisher, and even if it itself is the establisher, it would fall into the fault of infinite regress. If it is said that it is not, it is because of remembering the connection of the object-possessor that enters by indicating the object there, because the nature of cause and effect is none other than concomitance and opposition. Similarly, if what is reasonable to see is not seen, it is also said that it does not exist, therefore, because it indicates with the reason that if it is not seen, it does not exist, it establishes a name on ignorance. Just as saying that the generator is the father. Not seeing is also invisibility, and it also prevents the name of existence because there is no other reason, just as saying that not being a generator is not being a father. Therefore, all that is not established by itself is an establisher related to self-nature, because it is not confused and relies on others, so the non-perceptual valid cognition is none other than inference. Others say that there is no non-perceptual valid cognition, which is not reasonable, because, for the sake of the measure and the common establishment of the other party, and for the sake of understanding the minds of others, and also for the sake of preventing some, other valid cognitions exist. In order to enter without confusion, by ascertaining that the clarity of some knowledge has deception and non-deception upon entering, how to indicate, so only direct perception is valid cognition, while inference is
