etc. Those who are driven by whipping are donkeys, etc. Those who are driven by hooking with an iron hook are elephants. Those who are driven by striking with a stick are cattle, etc. Regarding the suffering of the hungry ghost realm, it is also said, "Even hungry ghosts are impoverished by desire," etc. Here, too, it should be understood that the common and the particular are being taught. For the moment, the common teaching is the suffering caused by being impoverished by desire, old age, etc. Because desire is never completely satisfied, it is continuous. The mention of "incurable" is to show the unbearable nature of the suffering. The mention of "hunger and thirst," etc., is a summary of the words hunger, thirst, cold, heat, as well as fatigue and fear. The extremely unbearable suffering caused by these is to be combined with "the fierce suffering needs to be shown." Among these, fatigue occurs to those who run around for food. The fear of these arises when they see men holding swords, pestles, and ropes. Regarding the particular teaching of suffering, it is said, "Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle," etc. Those whose mouths are as small as the eye of a needle are spoken of in this way. To say "the belly is as big as a mountain" is to say that the belly is the size of a mountain. To say "not even a little bit of impurity can be discarded" is because the hole of the mouth is small, so even a little bit of impurity that is discarded at will cannot be eaten. To say "some are skin and bones" means without flesh. To say "naked" means nude. To say "like a dried palm tree top" is to say like a dried palm tree head. Those hungry ghosts are called non-gods. Some hungry ghosts have mouths that burn, and when they open their mouths, it is like a burning flame. If you ask whether it is day or night, the answer is no, but "night," referring to the night. Again, if you ask what food they eat, the answer is "they eat sand that falls into the burning mouth." This means that the sand that falls that makes the mouth burn is the sand that falls into the burning mouth. Those hungry ghosts who have these as food are spoken of in this way. Some hungry

Furthermore, even impure things like pus and blood cannot be found. What is the reason for that? Because they are called inferior castes, meaning they have not accumulated merit. So, what do those beings eat? It is mentioned that they strike each other, etc., meaning that those beings, seeing each other, strike each other due to the influence of anger. Some pull out sticks from their hands and strike each other. Therefore, those beings develop tumors in their throats, and when the tumors are completely ripe and burst, they flow into the body and serve as food. For some hungry ghosts, even the moon becomes hot in the summer, and when winter comes, even the sun becomes cold. It is said in the sutra that trees become fruitless, meaning that for those beings who lack merit, trees do not bear ripe and sweet fruits, and the branches and leaves become like those burned by fire, without fruits and leaves. They can dry up rivers flowing with cool and sweet springs, just by looking at them, as if scorched by the poison in their eyes. Some hungry ghosts are filled with burning torches of blazing fire. Some hungry ghosts have rivers of pus flowing with various kinds of worms. Some hungry ghosts are filled with feces and urine. How long do such beings live? It is mentioned that some live for five thousand years or even ten thousand years, meaning that some beings live for five thousand years, and some even live for ten thousand years without dying. What kind of characteristics do they have? It is mentioned that they constantly endure suffering, meaning that they are constantly tormented by the feeling of suffering. So, why do those beings, whose bodies suffer so much, not perish? It is mentioned that their bodies are firmly bound by the ropes of evil deeds, meaning that those beings who are firmly bound by the ropes of evil deeds do not perish. So, what is the cause of such suffering? It is mentioned that the hungry ghosts are like that, etc. Among them, "like that" refers to relying on what was said before. "Various" refers to hunger and thirst.
