Rato. Thus, thinking that the Blessed One, without wavering, completely gave away his own head and became a Bodhisattva, other aspirants to Bodhi should also abide with steadfast resolve in giving. This Jataka of the Blessed One is the supreme object of offering for the Arhats, it is the cutting off of the great stream of suffering of Samsara, it is spoken by the Tathagata himself. At that time, I became the lord of the land named Moonbeam, Shariputra was the minister, and that Brahmin was Devadatta. This is the Moonbeam Jataka, the fifth Jataka. Even when a Bodhisattva was in the form of a woman, she cut off flesh from her own body and gave it away. For those who have the ability to benefit others and possess a human body, what need is there to mention those with extraordinary intention and power? Thus it was heard: a place adorned to the extreme with various kinds of verdant gardens, possessing commercial streets filled with merchants as wealthy as the giver of wealth, a place where the Gandharvas dwell, with white as the predominant color, possessing lotuses like ornaments of the earth, a place called Endowed with Perfection, possessing a king's palace, which is still famous today. There, a Bodhisattva manifested as a woman named Endowed with Form, who was in her prime of youth, with beauty like a goddess. She benefits others in a manner close to peace, and with accomplishment and clarity of mind, she causes great wonder to people, she appears like compassion incarnate. Then, at one time, the roots of virtue in that place were exhausted, seeing that the treasuries and storehouses were all empty, and the people were universally impoverished,

Possessing wealth and people who are poor and single-minded about food, a great famine occurred, causing harm like associating with non-holy people. The delightful breasts became shriveled, like pure golden vases. Women without food abandoned their heavy, hard hoes. Because they clung to completely diminished happiness, the branches of their arms became stiff. The bracelets of women with completely impoverished eyes all became loose. Completely disheveled hair covered them, the night having passed, without luster like a rabbit's placenta. Eyebrows lost their charm, and the faces of the women became haggard. After plastering the inside of the house with mud, they gave old food to the children, but the mistress herself did not grieve in that way. The master, seeing the hungry on the road, would not give alms. Buffaloes, abandoning grass fodder due to death, made sounds, possessing shaking dewlaps. Cows that came from the forest to their master's house especially had tears and wet eyes. Gradually becoming weak, and unable to eat grass, they gradually had difficulty walking. Becoming especially loose, the cows' udders all dried up. Seeing a slightly diminished weak strength, approaching the base of the tail, they were all confused. In any case, it was clear about suitable words,

Whose limbs were covered with decay, who, with reverence pleasing to herself, free from attachment to her son, saw which woman desired to eat that very son! Having seen her, she said to her, "Sister, do you wish to do this extremely cruel deed?" That woman also thought thus: "This one called 'Possessing Form' has the nature of generosity and is endowed with compassion. Therefore, if I speak this matter to her, she will surely become the remedy for my hunger." Having thoroughly considered this, she said, "Sister, I am exceedingly weak from pregnancy, and my body is consumed by the fire of hunger that is manifestly increasing. Therefore, I desire to eat this young son." This young child named 'Chest-born' is seen as if being hated, and we sentient beings do not see dharma and non-dharma. Then, Possessing Form, whose lotus eyes were filled with tears, having given rise to compassion, spoke these words to the woman: "This afflicted one, covered with the hair of a householder, who is clearly seen merely by weeping with compassion, who is enchanting like a fawn and possesses beautiful eyes, how can you, merciless mother, eat a child? With a high topknot, moving quickly and vigorously, whose eyelashes are roughened by the dust of the earth, who is gentle and caring even towards the children of others, love naturally arises for women. With lips that have been played with and disarranged, possessing especially wide eyes, covered with stammering speech, why can you not strive to look at the face of your son? Imitating the gait of a horse, doing it for the sake of the child, dwelling on a stick-horse, covered with a fragrant topknot, the row of teeth that have been played with and disarranged is crooked and beautiful, which woman does not desire to look at her son? Opening her lips, she looks around with joy, making a rough sound because she desires to eat food, even though the crow-mother is completely tormented by hunger, the child strives to follow, what need does a virtuous living woman have for spices? Furthermore, on the street, people will...
