One should pay homage to the departed and the two elders. Having said this, it means that only the Sugata Bhagavan and the two elder renunciants who hold vows should be paid homage, and not others. "And" is used to connect. One who recites mantras should not pay homage to other deities. This means that one should not pay homage to other deities who recite mantras, such as the Great Lord. Why? Because they are not elders by vows. Having said this, it means that because those deities are not elders by vows, one should not pay homage to them. The sound "འི་འི་" is used to complete the sentence. So, how should one who recites mantras made by others recite? Reciting mantras made by others, (one should take refuge in) the Three Jewels. Having said this and so on, it means that one should only pay homage to the Three Jewels, offer with the offering of homage, and then recite and read the mantras made by others. The sound "འི་འི་" is used to determine other sequences. If someone pays homage to other (deities), what will happen? From the refuge, take refuge in the Buddha. Having said this and so on, it means that a renunciant who has taken refuge in the Buddha, who should be taken refuge in, thinks of other kinds of deities, and pays homage with his mind, such a person will decline, and will devour the fire of merit of the place. What has he done to cause this? He has abandoned the signs of the Shakya clan. Having said this, it means that he has abandoned the Shakya clan, that is, the signs and attire of the Bhagavan, and has harmed them. "And" is used to connect, because (he) has abandoned other attire, other thoughts, other actions, and other (refuges) other than the Three Jewels. This is contrary to requesting the Khenpo, which is one of the thirteen root downfalls. Now, explain the aspects of destroying vows. Having said this and so on, it means that what is said is consistent with all aspects of destroying vows. "Then" refers to what is said immediately after. "Vows" refers to all the precepts held by a bhikshu, which are destroyed, completely abandoned and offered, and the object belonging to this aspect is called "vows." What are those? (They are) the Three Jewels.

Disrespecting mothers, etc., indicates that. Disrespecting the Three Jewels is contempt, because one does not take seriously what he says, etc. Saying things like, "What use is this Dharma?" is contempt for the Dharma. Without giving permission, greatly exceeding his command, etc., is disrespect for the Sangha because it is contempt. Similarly, all such words should be observed. Like that, below it says, "No dwelling for more than five days, etc.," meaning that if one dwells, abandons learning, or goes to another place, if one enters in order to seek a dwelling, dwelling without a dwelling for more than five days, then dwelling there will not be without fault. Or, it is the meaning of distinction, if one merely enters seeking but does not find, then from the first day onwards, etc. If one goes to another place without a dwelling, upon arriving at the dwelling, dwelling without a dwelling after the third day, those should be understood. Here, not only is one displeased with dwelling without a dwelling for more than a day and night as spoken of, but also one cannot obtain and consume this. Abandoning divisions and Uposatha, etc., means that abandoning those activities of abandonment and Uposatha, that is, not doing those things. Like this, if a novice does not do the activities of abandonment and Uposatha, it will be shown that one is displeased. Because it has been said that novices should do Uposatha, one might think there is no fault. Therefore, it is said, "Even if there is no manifest ritual," etc., meaning that even if there is no manifest, actual ritual of doing Uposatha, that is, that novices should do Uposatha, even if there is not, abandonment is spoken of, because the Vinaya here speaks of and shows the abandonment of novices, therefore there is Uposatha. Because the Blessed One, after the monks had done abandonment, said that the novices should also do abandonment. Therefore, it should be understood that they also have Uposatha, because these two have no different meaning, so how is it?
