If one lacks anything, then the three things mentioned above cannot be done. What are the five pairs? They are caring for the sick and dispelling doubts, as well as reversing sinful views and abandoning unpleasant places. These are things that can be done or can be made others do. These four things that are mentioned by name, whether one can do them oneself or entrust them to others, are both acceptable. Among them, caring for the sick indicates being able to endure suffering and having compassion. Dispelling doubts indicates being proficient in the Vinaya. Reversing from wrong views indicates being proficient in the Abhidharma. Abandoning unpleasant places indicates understanding others' minds. The phrase "able to make others do" does not mean that one cannot do it oneself. Why is that? Because the best of the limbs is being proficient in the Vinaya. If one is not proficient in the Vinaya, one cannot dispel doubts. So, why say "do" and "make others do"? Because some are tamed in this way, and some are tamed in that way. Because I do not understand, it is not entrusting it to others, but if I am pointed out by others, then I will be tamed. In order to complete the incomplete five pairs below, the sutra of combination is taught, which is that for those above the "great learner" who did not exist before, they should be combined with "having discipline" and "much learning." That is to say, the content that appears after the word "great learner" indicates that the incomplete five pairs should be combined with these two. Among them, having discipline should not be understood merely as not having committed a root downfall, but as guarding even the minor precepts, which is respected by all worldly people. Much learning refers to where the three pitakas arise from, and at that time, one should be guided to hear the outer treatises. Knowing the three pitakas thoroughly refers to the retention, proficiency, understanding, and clarity of the three pitakas, which are mentioned in the scriptures. The Acharya here summarizes these as "understanding the three pitakas," therefore, for each of these four things mentioned by name, they should be supplemented with "having discipline" and "much learning." In general, it should be understood that there are four kinds of five pairs.
