The venerable ones should decide and know these things in advance, and start now. Soon after, the venerable one will ask, "Have you not forgotten anything?" At the end, urge them, which means that when leaving, the venerable one will say with fatherly love, and urge them, "Have you not forgotten, and is there nothing left undone?" The young monks should not be distracted, nor laugh arrogantly, this is what the venerable one who wants to leave teaches. When gathering at the residence, everyone should respect each other, which means that when gathering at the residence of lay people, everyone should respect each other's clothing. Everything should be known, which means that the venerable one should know the names and surnames of their own retinue. Regarding the teachings of conduct and behavior, and steadfastness, etc., the acquisition of food, the treatment of diseases, etc., arrange and accomplish, and give benefit, which means that the venerable one has not taught the conduct of begging for alms, etc., and the conduct of walking, etc., and the transmission of scriptures, etc., the search for and giving of food and treatment of diseases, etc. When entering the summer retreat, for those monasteries that have not been repaired, urge and have them repaired, which means that the venerable one who enters the summer retreat urges and has the new monks who are not good at repairing the monasteries to repair them. One should be happy for those who repair, which means giving praise to those who repair without being urged. Everyone should gather those who belong to their retinue and want to talk about things by giving corresponding Dharma teachings, which means that the venerable one who enters the summer retreat, not just a few venerable ones, but all venerable ones, should give corresponding talks to the new monks who belong to their retinue about the things they want to talk about, such as Dharma and discipline. For those who like silence, give them the opportunity, which means giving those who do not like Dharma talks and like the silence of the noble ones the opportunity to do what they like. For the lay people who come, give food, which means that for the lay people who come to the monastery, the venerable one should urge the Sangha to give food. If they do not give or do not want to, then speak Dharma to them, and say that we possess this, which means that if the Sangha does not give food, or they do not want the food of the Sangha, then speak Dharma to them, and say that we do not have wealth, but we possess the giving of Dharma.

The master subdues their minds with mindfulness. Those who possess this ability should examine their retinue. This is not limited to just one abbot; all disciples and attendants should understand what virtuous deeds their respective retinues are practicing, and so on. After examining in this way, what should be done if some people are not diligent and engage in meaningless activities? This is what is called "restraining the negligent." Just like this, going there and so on, means: patrol your own retinue, and also combine their circumstances and do not let them feel difficulties. Do not speak rudely and rashly, meaning: do not speak incoherently, and do not say idle gossip and jokes unrelated to the Dharma and discipline to the retinue. Like treating a residence and an abbot, incidentally, these teachings include not walking in front of the accompanying monks, and so on, meaning: the follower should not walk in front. Do not stand, meaning: do not stand or sit in front of me. Answer what is said and complete the task, meaning: the follower should answer what the person in front says, or should practice his teachings. Or, do not speak until he has spoken. Do not interrupt the conversation, meaning: when the person in front is talking to others, do not interrupt or cut in. If what is said is not in accordance with the Dharma, it should be stopped, meaning: when the person in front is speaking the Dharma, if he says something contrary to the Dharma, he should stop and object, saying, "It is not like that." If it is in accordance with the Dharma, it should be rejoiced, meaning: if he says something in accordance with the Dharma, he should praise, saying, "It is good." If wealth is obtained because of teaching the Dharma, etc., the follower should take it. Now that it has been explained what the follower should do, incidentally, the items that arise from trivial matters, etc., including not wandering around in the patron's house, not being arrogant, and not staying for a long time, etc., meaning: if you go to the patron's house, do not wander around, do not be arrogant, and do not stay for a long time. Do not divert your eyes, meaning: do not stare at women, etc.

Giving Dharma talks to householders means not talking to them about worldly matters, but only about Dharma matters. So, what are Dharma matters? They are to encourage them to practice generosity, discipline, restraint, the place of pure conduct, fasting, taking refuge, and receiving precepts. Among them, generosity is giving, discipline is disciplining the senses, restraint is restraining body and speech, the place of pure conduct is the conduct of renunciation, and if one is a householder, then let them observe the practice of lifelong fasting. Fasting refers to observing eight precepts for one day and one night. Taking refuge refers to taking refuge in the Three Jewels. Receiving precepts refers to receiving the five precepts. One should remember that nine behaviors become the gate of downfall, which refers to going to secular homes, begging for alms, entering, making bowls, etc. For the nine behaviors, one should take mindfulness as the priority. It is not that samsara does not listen, which means that no matter who it is, samsara will watch and listen. For those who come, say "You have come well," and first express joy, which means that whether it is a householder or a renunciant, whoever comes from elsewhere, say this: "Happy, happy!" Be clear with a smile and a clean face, with a smile in front, which means that for those who come from elsewhere, do this. If there is a householder, then give him a Dharma talk, which means that if there is a householder who comes from various places, then give him a Dharma talk. If there is no one here, then those who live in the village should try their best to make him happy. Preparing water and cushions means that whether living in a village or a monastery, one should prepare these things for the visiting householders, etc. Sweeping, laying cushions, placing water, asking, and giving food should be done by the younger generation, which means that the things mentioned above should be done by the younger generation. Accepting and preventing actions that violate the Sangha, refers to actions such as playing games that violate the rules of the monastery and forgetting the Dharma...
