The so-called "བསྟབས་པ་(bstabs pa)" means to call and request. How to request? It means "མ་བཅད་པ་(ma bcad pa)", which means not to limit, saying "take these", if not clearly limited, it will be a mistake. If a householder requests, will all of these lead to mistakes? The answer is "ཇི་བདེར་མ་བྱས་ནའོ་(ji bder ma byas na'o)", which means that even if it has been requested, if you don't say "take what you want", it will be a mistake. If a monastic requests alms, will it also be a mistake? The answer is "ཁྱིམ་པ་ཡིན་ནའོ་(khyim pa yin na'o)", which means that if the requester is a householder, then the mistake will be made from the beginning. How much food will cause a mistake? Except for vegetables, if you receive more than five and a half "ཕུལ་(phul)" units of rice cooked in the country of Magadha, or if you receive more than this amount for yourself or a friend's share, it will be a mistake. So, how does it cause a mistake? The answer is "ཟོས་ནའོ་(zos na'o)", which means that swallowing it will cause a mistake. Does all eating cause a mistake? The answer is "མནོས་ནའོ་(mnos na'o)", which means that if you don't eat it on the spot, but accept it and then eat it, it will cause a mistake. Here, "ཉེས་བྱས་(nyes byas)" refers to accepting it will cause a mistake. "གཞན་གྱིས་བྱས་པ་ཡང་ངོ་(gzhan gyis byas pa yang ngo)" refers to letting others accept it, and then eating it, will also cause a mistake. Otherwise, "ཉེས་མེད་(nyes med)" means that if you have not accepted it, but eat it on the spot, there will be no mistake. "སྐམ་ཡང་ངོ་(skam yang ngo)" means that if you accept dry rice, even if it exceeds the amount mentioned above, there will be no mistake in this case. If the accepted amount exceeds the limited amount, it should be distributed to other monks, meaning that if it does not exceed the amount mentioned above, and you accept it but do not eat it yourself, you should distribute it to other monks, do not discard it. Do not accept more than two or three bowls full. The following describes the situation where eating food that has already been given away will cause a transgression: "འགྲངས་ཀྱི་བར་དུ་བཟའ་(’grangs kyi bar du bza’)" etc., means to eat until you are full. "ཟས་བརྩམས་ནས་མི་ལྡང༌(zas brtsams nas mi ldaNg)", means to start eating in that row until you are full. The definition of starting to eat is: whether it is salt or wine, anything, as long as it is something that has been started to eat, no matter how much, it is like that.

If one takes even as much as salt, it indicates that it has been started, this is the intermediate display. Below it says, if one abandons midway or has leftovers, then, the characteristic of showing how to abandon and have leftovers is: if one rises from the seat, it is abandoned, etc., that is, rising from whatever seat one is in is abandonment. What is that? It is "from sitting" etc., that is, rising from the sitting position is when a fault occurs. Is it rising from the sitting mat? It is said to have started from the food of the fundamental vows etc., that is, rising from the food of the vows etc. is when it is considered abandoned. Is it that merely rising is considered abandonment? No, if it is the vow of root, stem, leaf, flower, and fruit, and other foods that are permissible to eat, not mixed with impermissible foods, if one prevents sitting in the direction where it is permissible to distribute, that is, even if these kinds of foods are distributed, if one prevents it with words such as "I don't want it" even if one gives it with pleasure, it indicates abandonment. If one says "I don't want to eat it," then the vow is also abandoned. If one says "I don't want the vow," then the food is not abandoned. If one does not explicitly say "I don't want it," but says other words that accomplish that meaning, it is also abandoned, for example, if one says "It is given," it is the same. "It's gone," etc., "It's finished eating" is also the same, that is, even if one thinks in one's mind that one doesn't want it, but pretends to accept what others have given, or says "Oh, it's given," or says "It's gone up," or says "It's finished eating," it also indicates that it has been abandoned. If the word "for a while" is not added, that is, if one does not add "for a while" or "a little" etc. to those words mentioned above, then it will be the same as before. If one says "It's enough," it also indicates abandonment. Showing the characteristic of drinking is: soup without food residue on top is also drinking, and thin porridge where five fingers cannot be seen is also, that is, showing that soup of this amount and thin porridge of this amount are also included in the category of drinking. Above it was said that if one prevents giving, it is abandonment, now showing its distinction is: if it is a joke, it is not giving and receiving, that is, if one suspects that others are joking and prevents it by saying "I don't want it," this is not considered abandonment.
