How much should the given clothes be? Here it says that a cubit (khru gang) around the clothes is considered the end, meaning that clothes of a cubit around and above can be considered as acquired clothes. The so-called "half-yojana journey" refers to what is the measure of the "unwalked path" mentioned above? It refers to half a yojana. Also, the so-called "also" refers to giving again and again, gathering together to eat, etc., also measured in yojanas. The so-called "walking here or on a boat" means whether walking on the road or walking on a boat, it is measured by the measure of half a shout (rgyang grags). Showing the characteristics of action, the so-called "slightly or just smearing the whisk and oiling is action" means that if only these degrees of things are done, it indicates that something has been done. What is it for? The so-called "this is for the Sangha or the stupa" means that for the Sangha or the stupa, if it is done as above, it indicates that something has been done. How should the so-called "patient" be counted? The so-called "the measure of the patient is weakness" means that if the patient cannot even eat a mouthful of rice, he can be counted as a patient. The so-called "continuous is not invitation" means that except for continuous food that has not been invited, continuous eating is not included in the number of repeated times. The so-called "also of the whole journey" refers to the invited lama, who has glanced at everything, etc., and eats a little here, and then says, "You can go wherever you want," like this, even if you eat the food set up like a hungry ghost, there is no fault. The so-called "joking is not existence" means that if you joked and invited before, and then secretly ate it, because the previous invitation was real, there is no fault. The so-called "not for that Sangha" means that the Sangha is not invited for me, a bhikkhu, but I am only a member of the group collectively invited by the Sangha, then there is no fault even if I eat again and again. The so-called "giving to the other five can also be done" means that it is okay to give to and let the five people who are invited again and again, the bhikkhu, bhikkhuni, novice, and novice nun, stay. The so-called "that is the Dharma" means that it is reasonable to let them stay and give like that. The so-called "taking others" means that there is no fault in taking food again and again to others.

The saying 'In times of famine, one should take everything for oneself' means that even if one takes everything for oneself during a famine, it shows that there is no repeated offense. The saying 'It is okay to eat' means that it is not a sin to eat everything one finds during a famine. The saying 'It is okay to give' means that it is permissible to hoard everything one finds during a famine. If the patron is unhappy when one gives to others or hoards in this way, what should one do? If one is worried that the patron will be unhappy, after eating two or three mouthfuls, one should say: 'This monk is lacking in food, so I have hoarded some; may the householder rejoice.' This is what one should aspire to, and in this way, one can hoard food while one's companions are busy with food. One can eat repeatedly. Now, intending to explain the downfall of dwelling places: 'This Dharma is not for laypeople, but together with householders, not for the nine assemblies of renunciates, is a dwelling place,' and so on. That dwelling place was not built for us renunciates, nor was it built for the nine assemblies of renunciates, but for the renunciates of the heretics, and it shows that being together with the householder is a fault. If someone asks, 'What kind of person will be at fault?' The answer is: 'Not a sick person, and if the patron has not invited.' If one is not sick and the patron has not invited, then one will be at fault. If one does this, what kind of fault will one incur? If one eats after eating, one commits a root downfall; if one stays after staying, one commits a minor downfall. The saying 'Even if there is no owner' means that if one eats twice in the absence of an owner, one commits a minor downfall. Here, 'the renunciates here are like heretics' means that just as if one eats twice in a dwelling built by heretical renunciates, there is only a minor downfall, so too, if one eats twice in a dwelling built by our renunciates, one will incur a minor downfall. The saying 'Relatives too' means that if one eats twice in a dwelling built by relatives, one will incur a minor downfall. Similarly, if one eats non-food provisions, one will incur a minor downfall. This is about dwelling places (downfalls). Now, intending to explain the downfall of taking more than two or three begging bowls.
