By those who practice together, examine individually the things that arise from the place, and thereby observe the dwelling place. If such things arise, then one should promise to abide there. Similarly, the arising of happiness and joy that have not arisen, and the ability to protect what has already arisen, by those who practice together, examine individually the things that arise from the place, and thereby observe the dwelling place. If such things arise, then one should promise to abide there. Similarly, if there is a sick attendant, by those who practice together, examine individually the things that arise from the place, and thereby observe the dwelling place. If such things arise, then one should promise to abide there. Similarly, examine individually from which village of the practice area one can obtain alms and so forth, and thereby observe the practice area. If such a thing exists, then one should promise to abide there. Similarly, examine individually which benefactor can provide the cause of alms, sickness, and the implements of medicine, and thereby observe those who give alms and medicine. If such a thing exists, then one should promise to abide there, and it should be combined in this way. If all of those are absent, then one should not promise to abide there. Among these, suffering refers to the body. Displeasure refers to the mind. Not arising refers to not causing what has not arisen to arise. Eliminating refers to treating what has already arisen. Happiness refers to the body. Joy refers to the mind. Arising refers to causing what has not arisen to arise. Protecting refers to using everything in such a way that the assembly that has already arisen will in no way decline. Examining individually means to know individually. Here, the scripture is that the monk should examine in this way: In this dwelling place, are there any of my co-practitioners who can prevent my regret, suffering, and displeasure from arising if they have not arisen, eliminate them if they have arisen, and cause happiness and joy to arise if they have not arisen, and protect them if they have arisen, and who can care for me when I am sick? One should examine individually, and thereby observe the dwelling place, and in this practice area, I can

Now, regarding whether to give equal and medical alms, one should investigate separately, and observe in detail the place of use and the patron. After that, promise to stay in that place. Otherwise, one should not promise to stay, as it is said. Where should one promise to stay? Therefore, it should be said in the covered place, in front of the bhikkhu. That is, in the inner direction of the covered place above the residence, in front of the bhikkhu, on the morning of the sixteenth, promise to stay. The mantra for that is: Venerable ones, please listen, I, named so-and-so, in this place, including the inside of the boundary, in this way, in order to repair the broken and collapsed residence, by the patron named so-and-so, and the attendant named so-and-so, and the village of the place of use named so-and-so, and the maidservant named so-and-so, promise to stay for the first three months. I am staying here, and my place of stay is this, thus it should be said three times, as it is said. For the later stay, it should be said in the difference of the mantra: promise to stay for the later three months. One should not set a boundary in the temple, that is, in the temple, one should not press multiple boundaries with one object, and the bhikkhu should not promise to stay. The text here says that the bhikkhu should not promise to stay in two temples. If one does so, one will commit a serious offense, as it is said. One should not stay in a place where there are no bhikkhus and no doors, that is, in a temple where there are no bhikkhus and no doors, one should not promise to stay. If there are patrons, attendants, villages of the place of use, and sick attendants, they should be mentioned, that is, if that place

The statement "one should not go out at dawn" means: a bhikṣu who has vowed to observe the summer retreat should not go out beyond the boundary at dawn without having been blessed for seven days, etc. There is no fault in going outside the boundary during the time from dawn to sunrise. Even so, if one goes, one should not stay there, because (the Buddha) said so. The statement "one should make a seven-day blessing for the sake of a Dharma-related purpose" means: not being separated from the Dharma is being Dharma-related. For the sake of this purpose, if one goes outside the boundary, then within one day, two days, or less than seven days, as long as that purpose is accomplished, one should go after making a blessing in front of one bhikṣu within the boundary. The mantra here is: "I request the venerable one directly. I, named ..., having vowed to stay for three months of the early summer retreat in this place within the boundary, I, without ..., for the sake of something, go outside the seven-day boundary, and return by that time, please bless me. I am staying here in the summer retreat, and this is my summer retreat place." This is repeated three times. For the later summer retreat, the mantra should be changed to "having vowed to stay for three months of the later summer retreat." The "seven days" mentioned here are only an example. One should say how many days it takes to accomplish that purpose, whether it is one day, two days, or less than seven days. To show the purpose related to the Dharma, for example: the bhikṣu's joyful offering to the sangha, repairing temples, providing lodging, establishing firm precepts, repairing stupas, sculpting Buddha images, erecting banners, making offerings, and applying ropes with paint, sandalwood, and saffron, reading, eliminating regret, abandoning wrong views, accomplishing things that are in accordance with (the Dharma), asking for forgiveness, and four actions such as moving, expelling, and comforting the sick. If a bhikṣu is outside the boundary, and other similar Dharma-related things occur, in order to accomplish these things, the bhikṣu who has taken the vow to observe the summer retreat stays within the boundary...
