It is the meaning of 'ya'. Among those, even though there are already many speakers, it is not the case that everyone is spoken to, that is its meaning. 'Do not do without asking' means do not teach. If it is not expressed in words at that time, it means: even without inviting the Sangha with words, one can still teach the Dharma, and the speaker appears here in this way. Just like this, because of facing, it is facing, consistent with those monks. What appears here is just an example, in all cases, abiding through it, that is the permission. In all circumstances, it should be understood that it is transformed from the words of the Sangha's abbot. For those who abide, it is abiding; for the lay attendants, it is the preceptor of recitation; for the nuns, it is the monks; for those who have not taken full ordination and those who have renounced, it is for those who have taken full ordination, because it is a place of abiding. For the newcomer, in front of the food, in order to declare merits, beside the seat, that should not be known without asking. 'Should not be in rows' means, not in the shape of rows and special postures, but becoming the remaining retinue. Here is its ultimate meaning, this is not presenting a shape, this 'should not be divided into half rows' should be known from there. The shape of the rows for listening to the Dharma, like the shape of a crescent moon in the courtyard, this is permitted. Therefore, this posture is prohibited, because when monks teach the Dharma in this posture, it becomes noisy, this is said in the Matters. From this, it can also be known that it belongs to the ultimate meaning here. Regarding 'should not be divided into half rows', here the treatise of these two comes from the Mother Sutra: 'What should not be said, should not be said in half rows, if said, one will commit an offense.' 'Two should not be made into one' means, whether it is in rows or half rows, this is abandoned. If for many or one, here the treatise on this is: 'Two should not be spoken in one row, the one who speaks will commit an offense.'

It is so. Regarding the matter of "elders sitting in order," if previously there were many, then because someone said "in order," it is incorrect to arrange according to his words. Because one abides in the majority, one should arrange according to the order of elders, this is the meaning. If there are many people, then place two or three cushions, this means that if one's retinue becomes numerous, then place their seats two or three levels higher, so that they are close to the higher seat. Is it that anything is acceptable? No, therefore it is said, "If those cushions are not obtained," meaning that if someone does not obtain two or three cushions, then he should abandon those cushions, and not others, this is the meaning. One who does not obtain two should also place two, one who does not obtain one should also place one, one should understand following this. Regarding the lion throne, it is also the same, one should abide and arrange in order. Placing a spittoon, this is because it is said that it is for discarding phlegm, so it can be understood. Here, both are begun, observing the Dharma speaker placing the Dharma seat separately, so these are said, one should understand that it is not just the lion throne. Saying these on the lion throne, while in other places it would appear very inferior, this should be avoided. Regarding "pouring in there," the spittoon should be regarded as a container, if what should be poured in there? Therefore it is said sand or ashes, but these two are just examples, because other things are also acceptable for this matter. Regarding "cleaning it from time to time," that "that" refers to the spittoon. Regarding "listening to the Dharma on the evenings of the eighth, fourteenth, and fifteenth," here, only the words "eighth and fourteenth" are temporarily seen from the distinctions, but in the Mother Tantra, there is also the saying of the fifteenth here. Here, one should allow the Dharma listeners to enter, because that time is the season, and it is very important, so it is determined that the later days of the season will decline, therefore it is said like this: "There is no fault if a sick person does not do this."

Satva. There is no fault for a sick person to listen to this Dharma, whether they listen or not. In the saying, 'To speak this, do not recite the prayer,' 'this' refers to the Dharma for the sake of listening to the Dharma. In the saying, 'If one is unable, etc., the prayer should be abridged,' it refers to being unable or being preoccupied with other matters. For those who are focused on other matters, etc., the word 'etc.' is used to include them. If there is no speaker, one should gradually recall, and even if it is just reciting a single verse. In the saying, 'Light a lamp there,' 'there' refers to the place where the Dharma is heard. In the saying, 'In the courtyard, the seating arrangement for listening to the Dharma should be arranged in the shape of a half-moon or a pond,' here, its meaning is just a common metaphor, and other harmless arrangements are also acceptable, so there is no certainty. If listening to the Dharma without a covering, one should wear a hat. In the saying, 'If it is windy and rainy, one should cover oneself,' it refers to a hat. In the saying, 'There, one should not abandon those who are listening to the Dharma,' 'there' refers to the place where it is windy and rainy. In the saying, 'There, the elder should first sit down, and without speaking for even a moment, sit quietly and then speak the Dharma, or ask another monk to speak the Dharma,' 'elder' refers to the elder of the Sangha. Here, 'sitting quietly without speaking' means to avoid noise. 'First sit down' refers to the beginning of entering into listening to the Dharma. 'There' refers to listening to the Dharma. 'Pray' means that the elder should pray to the Dharma speaker to speak the Dharma, and ask others to speak the Dharma. When speaking, one should be attentive, and if it is the Dharma, one should rejoice. If it is not, one should stop it. 'Be attentive' means to make the mind focused. 'If it is the Dharma' means if it is speaking the Dharma. In the saying, 'There, one should speak Dharma-related words to the assembled laypeople,' 'there' refers to the place where the Dharma is heard. If one reaches the end of listening to the Dharma, one should strive to complete what was started. If non-Buddhists seek fault and dwell there, one should skillfully restrain them, not show anger, and be patient. This refers to the elder.
