These are said to make the disciples generate joy and delight, and to engage in listening. Among these, the praise made by the compiler from "The Beautiful Victory Banner" to "The Mature Curtain" should also be divided into seven categories. What are these seven? They are: praising the Buddha, praising the Dharma, explaining that the appearance of the Buddha is the cause of happiness, explaining that relying on a virtuous spiritual friend is happiness, abandoning evil friends is happiness, explaining that obtaining the fruit is happiness, and explaining the place of obtaining the fruit. Among these, praising the Buddha should be done in conjunction with the first two shlokas, which again have five aspects: perfect fame, perfect teachings, perfect treasure, perfect retinue, and perfect excellent entry. Now, we are beginning to focus on the words of the Pratimoksha vows, so we have spoken of "The Beautiful Victory Banner" and so on. The phrase "The Beautiful Victory Banner, famous in the three realms" shows perfect fame. Among these, "beautiful" refers to the qualities of the body, speech, and mind of the Tathagata, that is, the ten perfections, the ten powers, and so on. This is because it arises from the complete accumulation of merit and wisdom, so the cause, such as generosity, is extremely beautiful, and the result, such as strength and non-confusion, is also extremely beautiful, so it is also called beautiful. How is it beautiful? It is because after the Bhagavan spoke the teachings, he gave inconceivable gifts of Dharma and material goods, so it is famously proclaimed in the world; similarly, the discipline is immaculate and completely pure, and patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom are unparalleled, so it is beautifully proclaimed and spread in the world, therefore, it is hoped that it is "famous in the three realms." Mentioning the victory banner, this is explaining the qualities of the Tathagata, such as the ten perfections, as an analogy, that is, just as wherever a beautiful victory banner is erected, that place appears very dignified and majestic, or just as evil people feel fear and timidity, or just as the sign of a general winning on the battlefield, or just as one strives for practice.

The son is the banner. Like those, just as the place where a good banner is erected is a noble dwelling, so too are the qualities of the Tathāgata, such as the Dharma of the Pāramitās, naturally noble dwellings. Or, just as erecting a good banner can make the wicked discouraged and shrink back, so too the Dharma of the Tathāgata's qualities can cause extreme discouragement to wicked heretics, those with wrong views, and so on, and thus it is also called the discourager. Or, just as a hero erects a victory banner when victorious on the battlefield, so too it is called the victory banner erected from victory over the enemy of the Maras. Or, because of diligence in the place, wherever there is a monastery, a good banner is erected. Furthermore, in places like India, wherever there is a market, a place that sells alcohol, or a brothel, a banner is erected. Because it is marked by the banner, even if one has not reached that place, one can know that it is a monastery, a place for selling alcohol, or a market, and one can understand and comprehend it through that. Similarly, even if ordinary people who are covered by great obscurations have not directly seen the Tathāgata, they can still explain and speak of the Tathāgata's qualities, such as the powers and the ten Pāramitās, and manifest them. Everyone knows, "Oh, there is such a noble being, a possessor of qualities." Therefore, for the sake of marking, it is called a banner. Just as a banner can mark a monastery and a market, so too the Pāramitās and so on can mark and point to the qualities of the Tathāgata. Because the good qualities of the Pāramitās are similar to a banner, they are used to mark the Tathāgata. Therefore, together with the metaphor and the meaning, it is said, "The beautiful banner is widely known in the three realms." Here, the meaning of the word "world" is explained: the world is both destructible and existent, therefore it is the world. Or, there are two worlds, namely the container world and the sentient world. Or, the three realms are the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. Among these, the desire realm is the sun.
