From these five, it should be taken and carried away by the faithful. Human milk should not be drunk, and there is no transgression for thread on the eyes. It is permitted to eat five kinds of leftover food: the sick, the attendants, those who come suddenly, those who are on the road, and the stewards. One should not eat food that is rotten inside or food that has been left overnight inside; neither of these should be eaten. Food left overnight inside refers to food left overnight inside the monastery on land that has not been dug up. In general, food cooked by monks should not be eaten, except in times of famine. Rice that is one-third cooked, as well as sprouts, flowers, fruits, meat, and fish that have completely changed color, and milk that has been boiled three times, even if cooked and eaten by oneself, there is no transgression. When eating, one should not first give to the heretics. If others eat these foods, and another patron entrusts the preparation of food, etc., one should first observe the patron before accepting. If given in the name of the Three Jewels, one should ask if it is given to the best of those with two feet, etc., and if they say it is given, one should not accept it. If they say, "You are our Buddha," then one should accept it. For the sake of the sick, all barley porridge is permitted. One should not trample on the place where food is transferred. If there is no water, one can wash one's feet with yogurt water and whey in a place where many cows are milked, and there is no transgression. In times of famine, children are allowed to do this. Having obtained alms in this way, one takes them and eats and soaks them in another's house, and if one wants to eat them later, one can eat the food that was taken before. Similarly, if leftovers that one has not bought and eaten oneself, and leftovers that have come to a public gathering, are brought and given by householders, one should say, "It has already been given," and then enjoy them. Mangoes should not be eaten; if the seed has formed or the flesh has rotted, there is no transgression in eating them. Determining what is suitable for a time period, even if all four are suitable, one should eat according to the time. After giving and receiving in the afternoon, it is suitable until the first watch of the night, therefore it is called food suitable for a time period. Food that can be kept for seven days or for a lifetime is also food suitable for a time period, and if mixed together, it is also suitable for a time period.
