The Blessed One said to the community of monks: Monks, meditate on the impure! Cultivate and habituate yourselves to the impure. If you do this many times, it will result in great fruit and great benefit. Thus, he taught the impure and also praised the merits of meditating on the impure. When the monks meditated on the impure, they became discouraged, disgusted, doubtful, and reproachful because of this body of pus. They would even draw swords, consume poison, bind themselves with ropes, and jump into precipices. In this way, the monks were also striving against the monks. The monks then reported to the Blessed One. Considering this event, this origin, and this occasion, the Blessed One gathered the community of monks and, having fully seen the ten benefits of establishing precepts, he said: My disciples should recite the basis for learning the discipline in this way: Furthermore, if any monk, whether a human or one who has taken human form, intentionally takes the life of a human being by his own hand, or gives him a weapon, or seeks someone to wield a weapon for him, or causes him to die, or praises death, saying to him: 'Hey man, why do you endure this evil, impure, and wretched life? Hey man, death is better than living!' In this way, through the desire of his mind and the thoughts of his mind, he causes him to die in various ways, or praises death. If that person then dies because of this, that monk has fallen and shall no longer abide. Thus, the precept was established. The location was Shravasti. The individuals were many monks. The affliction was unbearable. The offense was killing. Among these, the words 'monks' are as before. 'Human or' refers to one who has obtained the six faculties from the mother, namely, the faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. 'One who has taken human form' refers to one who has obtained the three faculties from the mother, namely, the faculties of body, life, and mind. 'Intentionally' means after careful consideration. 'By his own hand' means killing with his own hand.

O. If it is said, "Did you kill?", it means that life has been taken. If it is said, "Did you give a weapon?", it means giving a sword, razor, water knife, etc. If it is said, "Did you seek someone holding a weapon?", it means a man, woman, or hermaphrodite. If it is said, "Did you cause him to die?", there are three ways to cause death: one who has broken vows, one who has vows, and a sick person. To those who do not wish to die, causing them to die in the hope of obtaining an alms bowl, etc., if they die, it will result in defeat. If it is said, "It is also permissible to praise death," it means praising death in front of someone who is not pleased with death. If it is said, "Hey, you person," this is a respectful term in Tibetan. "Harming" means being alive. "Sin" means the fruit of sin or the root of sin. "Impure" means that the basis of the body is impure, because it arises together with impurity. "Bad" means slander. "What is to be done with this?" means, "What is to be done with this living, sin, impurity, badness, give it up." "It is better to die than to live" means slandering the living and praising death. Saying "saying" means speaking. What is the reason? Therefore it is said, "Because of the desire of the mind and the discriminations of the mind," the desire of the mind means clearly wishing that person to die with a murderous intent. The discriminations of the mind mean the discriminations of hoping to obtain his alms bowl, Dharma robe, net, bowl, belt, and other necessities of life. If it is said, "In many ways," it means in many ways. It is also said, "Did you cause him to die? Did you praise death to him?" This is added because of repeating the praise of death in many ways in front of someone who is not pleased with death. If it is said, "That person also died by that action," it means that the person also died by his own action of combining, and not by being killed by someone else. A monk will also be defeated by this and will not be able to abide, just as it was said before. Here it also refers to which monk studies the same precepts together with the monks.
