In the context of teaching the first stage of guidance, a Brahmin named Utkata, who had mastered the three Vedas and whose wisdom was like a flame that could see through all tenets, approached the Blessed One and inquired: "Venerable Gautama, some other heretics say, 'The world is permanent, therefore there is no liberation.' Others say, 'One will not die in the next life, therefore one will not transmigrate through the practice of the Vedas.' What do you say about this, Gautama?" To this, the Blessed One taught the stages of entry as follows: "Because it holds everything, it is the basis. 'Existing' refers to afflictions and actions. The basis is ignorance, because the root of existence is ignorance. The arising of existence depends on two things: view and craving. As long as there is attachment to self, there will be craving for self. Wherever there is attachment to both the view of self and craving, there will also be other subtle and gross habitual tendencies, just as dust adheres to damp cloth. If it exists in this way, then in order to show what arises, it will transform into action. Various kinds of craving and agitation will arise. 'Self' refers to the lord of gods, etc., as explained in the previous discourse, and other afflictions and near afflictions will arise, like a monkey, not staying still but manifesting. Just as in other places, it will agitate and enter. In other places, it will agitate and reverse the cycle of existence. Because there is action, there will be inclination. 'Inclination' means that it leads, therefore it is inclination. Thrown and fully realized by the existence of karma, and because of the cause of the complete accumulation of karma, it will incline towards existence. Because there is inclination, it will become very untamed. 'Very untamed' means that the demon of karma disturbs the minds of sentient beings, or if bound and drawn by the rope of karma, where will there be liberation? Or, at that time, the mind becomes very untamed in an unserviceable way, therefore it will fall into samsara, because this will produce the cause of arising here.

Therefore, it is shown that in other lives, it should be completely upheld. If there is something that is not well subdued, there will be going and coming. The so-called "coming" is coming back. The so-called "going" is going away. Because there is going and coming, one will accept death and rebirth in other places. That is to say, in other lives, one decays and dies and transmigrates. Its end is to be born and born again, which means to be born and perish. The so-called "like this" refers to showing the order previously mentioned. In order to show that birth precedes attainment in the order of the intermediate state, it is said "in other places," which refers to the birth in other worlds, that is, connecting oneself. Being born from the womb refers to the birth that is widely known in the world. Aging refers to things that change. Sickness refers to plagues and so on. Death refers to the characteristic of the cessation of life, warmth, and consciousness, which means separation from one's kind. This is to show acting in an instant. Sorrow refers to the true suffering arising from separation from what is loved. Crying out refers to speaking words with suffering. Suffering refers to the feeling of having five aggregates of consciousness. Discomfort refers to mental suffering. The so-called "disturbance" refers to being oppressed and harmed by cold and heat, mosquitoes and flesh flies, wind, and so on. Birth and aging, etc., are a collection of categories. Appearance refers to truly being born. Therefore, like this, in this way, it is not created by Ishvara and others, nor is it without cause. The so-called "this" refers to the aggregate of suffering. The so-called "only" refers to being uniquely selfless, or everything. The so-called "great" refers to being without beginning and immeasurable. The so-called "aggregate of suffering" refers to the aggregate of suffering, the accumulation of suffering, which means samsara. The so-called "will arise" refers to manifest accomplishment. In order to show from the opposite perspective, it is said "without dependence" and so on. Having ceased and not separated, that is, the characteristic of the cessation of suffering, nirvana. The remaining meaning has been said before.
