Those Buddhas who practice the two kinds of distinctions, which are peaceful and extremely secluded, have dispelled the darkness, gone to the other shore, and are endowed with fame. They have attained what is to be attained and have become masters of their minds. Those who are completely liberated, whose defilements are exhausted, and who are completely liberated, those liberated ones who possess wisdom and are without defilements, look upon the embodied beings of the world for their benefit. Just as some sit on the summit of a mountain and constantly look upon all beings, so too, those wise and sorrowless ones ascend to the top of the mansion born of Dharma and, looking upon those who are afflicted by the suffering of birth, old age, and decay, open the gate of immortality. Let those who wish to hear dispel their doubts. Thus ends the twenty-first chapter, "The Assembly of the Tathagata." Good listening and good conduct, as well as good departure from home, being well surrounded by renunciation, and being in accordance with the virtuous ascetic are also excellent. Children, the unwise, behave as if they were immortal. The wise act towards the sacred Dharma like a patient at night. Just as a house is well covered, and one enters into the darkness that covers it, even though there are forms, one cannot see them as if one had eyes. Similarly, in this world, even if a person born of noble lineage is endowed with intelligence, he will not know the difference between sinful and virtuous Dharma until he has heard it. Just as one with eyes sees forms with a lamp, so too, the Dharma of good and evil is known through hearing. Through hearing, one knows all Dharmas. Through hearing, one turns away from sin. Through hearing, one abandons the meaningless. Through hearing, one attains Nirvana. If one has heard much but does not keep the precepts well, then one is blamed for the sake of the precepts, and one's hearing is not perfect. If one has heard little but keeps the precepts well, then one is praised for the sake of the precepts, and one's hearing becomes perfect. He who has heard little and does not keep the precepts well is blamed for both, and his conduct is not perfect. He who has heard much and keeps the precepts well is praised for both, and his conduct becomes perfect. Much hearing and holding the Dharma

Yes, those who possess wisdom and are equanimous, no one should disparage them. Like golden ornaments of Jambudvipa. Whoever infers by form and measures me by sound, that person with desire and attachment does not know me. If the inner is consciousness, and the outer does not appear, not seeing the inner fruit, that can be guided by sound. If the outer appears, and the inner is not aware, seeing the outer fruit, that can be guided by sound. If the inner is not understood, and the outer does not appear, children are completely obscured, that can be guided by sound. If the inner is consciousness, and the outer is completely apparent, the Dharma determines the arising of wisdom, that can be guided by sound. The ear hears most, and the eye sees much, with all that is seen and heard of the Dharma, they are the kind of people who should be trusted. Understanding the essence of well-spoken hearing, and also understanding the essence of samadhi, whoever is heedless and lazy, their hearing and knowledge will not become meaningful. Whoever delights in the Dharma taught by the noble ones, and likewise practices with body and speech, those who are patient, enjoy companionship, and restrain their senses, attain the other shore of hearing and knowledge. The twenty-second chapter on hearing is complete. One should learn well-spoken words, one should revere the Shramanas, one should be secluded and alone, and the mind should be close to peace. Alone, with a single bed and mattress, practicing alone without idleness, dwelling alone in the forest, and taming oneself alone. Whoever conquers thousands upon thousands of people in battle, whoever conquers himself, that is the victory in the battle of men. The person who always practices discipline, by taming himself alone, conquering oneself is supreme, looking at other beings is vulgar. A Bhikshu abiding in wisdom, having conquered, cannot be defeated by Mara and Brahma. Not by gods, not by Gandharvas. First, having established oneself in reason, then tame others like oneself. First, having established oneself in reason, then when taming,
