Now, let's discuss the distinctions in some functions. What is the difference between shamelessness and recklessness? Disrespect is shamelessness. Disrespect towards virtues and those who possess virtues is the same as lacking respect, which is shamelessness. Recklessness means not fearing wrongdoing. Wrongdoing refers to what is condemned by the noble ones, and not fearing it is recklessness. Here, fear refers to undesirable consequences, because fear arises from it. The opposite is knowing shame and having a sense of shame, which should be understood. What is the difference between joy and respect? Joy and, joy has two aspects. Afflicted joy is attachment, such as towards children and wives. Unafflicted joy is faith, such as what is done towards the teacher, the lama, and those with virtues. Respect is the same as knowing shame. Respect is like knowing shame as previously explained. If these two are in the desire realm and the form realm, then in the formless realm, there is no joy or respect that is directed towards a person. What is the difference between investigation and analysis? Investigation and analysis are coarse and subtle. It will be explained below that they are functions of the mind. Investigation is the coarse aspect of the mind, and analysis is the subtle aspect of the mind. What is the difference between pride and arrogance? Pride is conceit, arrogance is, the mind is completely attached to one's own dharma. The mind becomes conceited by completely fabricating any difference from others, which is pride. Arrogance is the mind being completely attached to one's own dharma, that is arrogance. Mental factors have already been explained together with the mind. In order to establish these terms in the scriptures, these names are mentioned: mind, intellect, and consciousness, have the same meaning, because it distinguishes, it is mind, because it knows, it is intellect, because it discerns, it is consciousness. Mind and mental factors, as well as the basis and the object and the aspects, and the corresponding, have the same meaning, mind and mental factors, because they rely on the sense faculties, are called having a basis, because they grasp the object, are called having an object. Regarding that object, the mind differentiates with various aspects.

In order to cut through rocks, they possess various forms. In order to be jointly possessed, they possess similarities. With what forms are they jointly possessed? It is said: five forms. These five similarities are jointly possessed by having the same basis, object, form, time, and substance. How is it that the substance is the same? Just as there is only one mind, so too each of the mental factors is one. The mind and mental factors have been explained. The non-associated compositional factors are: attainment and non-attainment, homogeneity, the absorption of non-perception, life force and characteristics, and collections of names, etc. These compositional factors are neither associated with the mind, nor are they of the nature of form, so they are called non-associated with the mind. Among these, attainment is obtaining and possessing. There are two types of attainment: obtaining from non-attainment and complete loss, and possessing after obtaining. The opposite is established as non-attainment. Whose are these? Attainment and non-attainment belong to one's own continuum. They do not belong to the continuum of others, because there is no connection with others. Nor do they belong to those who do not belong to a continuum, because I, who am not counted as a sentient being, have no connection with anything. Again, attainment and non-attainment are two cessations. Because they are analytical and non-analytical, cessation is associated with all sentient beings. Analytical cessation is associated with some sentient beings. Attainment also has three temporal states. The attainment of past dharmas also has past, future, and present. Similarly, the attainment of future and present dharmas also has three states each. The virtuous, etc., of the virtuous, etc., the attainment of virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified dharmas are, in order, the virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified themselves. The self-realm of those belonging to them, the attainment of beings who abide in the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm is their own self-realm. The four states of those not belonging to them, the attainment of uncontaminated dharmas has four states: the attainment of analytical cessation is both the form realm and the formless realm.
