There are walls and a strong fence around it. It has four very distinct streets. The four gates have gatekeepers who are intelligent and clear, possessing the wisdom to discern those who come and go. They allow those they recognize to pass and prevent those they do not. The ruler of the city resides in the center of the street. From the east, two messengers came and approached the eastern gatekeeper, and having approached, they said to the eastern gatekeeper: 'Hey, sir, where is the ruler of the city?' 'Hey, sir, the ruler of the city is in the middle of this street.' Then, those two messengers approached the place where the city ruler was, and having approached, they spoke truthful words to the city ruler, and entered by the path of understanding. Similarly, from the south, west, and north, two messengers came and approached the place where the northern gatekeeper was, and having approached, they said to the northern gatekeeper: 'Hey, sir, where is the ruler of the city?' 'Hey, sir, the ruler of the city is in the middle of this street.' Then, those two messengers approached the place where the city ruler was, and having approached, they spoke truthful words to the city ruler, and entered by the path of understanding. Monks, this is a metaphor. It is made as a metaphor for the sake of understanding the meaning, and the meaning should be viewed in this way: The word 'city' refers to the coarse material body composed of the four great elements, born from the impure substances of parents, nourished by rice and warm porridge, a word for that which must be constantly washed, wiped, and completely destroyed. The words 'walls and fence' refer to the correct view. The words 'having four very distinct streets' refer to the six internal and external sense fields. The word 'four gates' refers to the four abodes of consciousness. The word 'gatekeeper' refers to

The precise term for mindfulness that pertains to time. "The lord of the city" is the precise term for consciousness together with grasping. "The two messengers" is the precise term for tranquility and insight. "Speaking the truth as it is" is the precise term for the four noble truths. "Entering by the path of realization" is the precise term for the noble eightfold path. Whatever a teacher does for his disciples is to cherish them, to have compassion for them, to desire their benefit, to desire their welfare. The teacher has already done what he can for his disciples. Now it is your task to rely on solitary places, the foot of a tree, an empty house, dense forests, mountain caves, grass, a hut of leaves, a place without shelter, and the most remote dwelling places in a cemetery, and to meditate. O monks, do not be heedless, lest you regret it later. This is the teaching of the Tathagata. The training is endowed with eight branches. The Blessed One dwelt in the city called Koruba Discipline. Then the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, there is one vehicle that completely purifies beings, completely transcends all sorrow and oppression, and extinguishes suffering and displeasure, namely, right concentration. Monks, these seven branches of the noble path are the cause and limb of right concentration. What are the seven? Namely, right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, and right mindfulness. Monks, when these seven branches of the noble path are cultivated and fully cultivated, and the mind becomes one-pointed, this is called right concentration. With cause and with limb, right view precedes, and from it virtuous qualities arise. Regarding wrong view, seeing wrong view as wrong view is right.
