Listen well, son of La, keep it in mind, and I will tell you. In the past, in a bygone era, in the city of Varanasi, there lived a wealthy householder, rich in possessions and great in enjoyment. His dwelling was vast and spacious, possessing the wealth of Vaishravana, even rivaling Vaishravana in wealth. He took a wife from among his equals, and together they played, rejoiced, and indulged, but they had neither a son nor a daughter. He rested his hands on his cheeks, brooding in his heart, 'My house has so much wealth, yet I have neither a son nor a daughter, so all my wealth will be taken by the king as "ownerless property."' Desiring a son and a daughter, he prayed to various special deities, such as Shiva, Varuna, Vaishravana, Indra, Brahma, and others. For example, he prayed to the guardian deities of gardens, the guardian deities of groves, the guardian deities of crossroads, the guardian deities of confluences, and those sentient beings born together with offerings, and the guardian deities who always accompany. Although it is said in the world that sons and daughters are born through prayer, this is not so. If it were so, then like a Chakravartin king, each person would have a thousand sons. However, sons and daughters are born only when three conditions manifest. What are these three? The union of parents with strong desire, the mother being fit and menstruating, and the presence of a Gandharva nearby. When these three conditions manifest, sons and daughters are born, not through praying to deities. He then had this thought: 'Perhaps I should take a second wife, so that it may be possible to conceive.' So he took a second wife from among his equals, and together they played, rejoiced, and indulged. In the course of playing, rejoicing, and indulging, at some point, she became pregnant. Filled with joy and happiness, she happily said to her husband, 'O honorable lord, rejoice!'

May it increase! I am with child, and as I rely on and dwell on my right side, I will surely have a son. She was happy and exceedingly joyful, raised the upper part of her body, stretched out her arms, and said specifically: I see the face of the son I have longed for, who is of my lineage and in accordance with it, and not in disagreement. He will do my work, and when he grows up, he will do the work of nourishing me. My lineage will last long, and after we die and pass away, whether few or many, may gifts be given and merits made. May these go to where their parents were born and follow them. May these offerings be given as gifts. She said this. She was considered to be with child and was placed on the foundation of the upper mansion. She was aware of cold and what is beneficial for cold, and warmth and what is beneficial for warmth. She ate and lived on food that was not too bitter, not too sweet, not too sour, and not too salty, as prescribed by the doctor, avoiding bitter, sweet, sour, and salty foods. She adorned herself with pearls and pearl necklaces, and like a goddess walking in a joyful garden, from bed to bed, from cot to cot, without her feet touching the ground and without hearing any unpleasant sounds, until the fetus was fully matured. Then, the elder wife saw these services and became jealous. She thought: If she gives birth to a boy, he will surely harm me, I must find a way. Those who indulge in desires do not refrain from doing evil deeds, so she gave her a substance that would prevent the fetus from falling into an unwanted abyss and cause it to miscarry, a kind of abortifacient. As soon as she drank it, the fetus would be aborted. Then, the second wife collected all of this and said to the elder wife: What medicine did you give me that caused me to miscarry? Then, the elder wife began to swear among the relatives: If I caused your fetus to miscarry, may I become a yaksha, eating children from birth to birth. Maudgalyayana's son, what do you think?

That is this hungry ghost woman. Because of jealousy, she gave medicine to cause abortion. Therefore, she was born as a hungry ghost, and because of the ripening of the karma of the false lies she made, she gave birth to five children day and night and ate them. For Maudgalyayana to avoid committing evil deeds, he should strive to learn. In order to avoid Maudgalyayana being born as a hungry ghost due to such a cause, he should learn. The Blessed One rejoiced and said so. The venerable Maudgalyayana, as well as the gods, nagas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, were very happy with what the Blessed One said and rejoiced. What does it mean when the sutra says that the spontaneously born Garuda lures the spontaneously born nagas to eat them? There are four kinds of nagas: those born from eggs, those born from wombs, those born from moisture, and those born spontaneously. There are also four kinds of Garudas: Garudas born from eggs, those born from wombs, those born from moisture, and spontaneously born Garudas. The Garuda born from eggs lures the nagas born from eggs to eat, but not those born from wombs, moisture, and spontaneously. If they are lured, they will turn into ashes. The Garuda born from moisture lures the nagas born from eggs, wombs, and moisture to eat, but not those born spontaneously. If they are lured, they will turn into ashes. The spontaneously born Garuda lures the nagas born from eggs, wombs, moisture, and spontaneously to eat, so it is said. What does it mean when the sutra says that there are seven existences? The place where the story takes place is in Shravasti. There are seven existences: the existence of hell, the existence of animals, the existence of hungry ghosts, the existence of gods, the existence of humans, the existence of karma, and the existence of the intermediate state, so it is said.
