Tree. If there is no attachment to the union of ignorance, if there is no union at all, one will not be reborn in samsara. Thus it is said. Desire is near-grasping, so it is said. The setting of the story is in Shravasti. Monks, when the Dharma of what has been nearly grasped and what is nearly grasping is proclaimed, listen well and remember well, and I will speak. What are the things that have been nearly grasped? Eye and form, ear and sound, nose and smell, tongue and taste, body and touch, mind and Dharma, these are the things that have been nearly grasped. What are the things that are nearly grasping? From where does desire arise, these are the things that are nearly grasping. Monks, I have thus proclaimed what has been nearly grasped and what is nearly grasping, and I have explained it in detail. Thus it is said, and it is also proclaimed in many other sutras. For example, a boat must be pulled back from the current with great effort. The Blessed One was staying in the bamboo grove of Rajagriha, the dwelling place of the Kalanda birds. At that time, the Venerable Shariputra was staying on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rajagriha. Then, the Venerable Shariputra called to the monks: Venerable ones, monks, go to a quiet place or under a tree or in an empty house, and thus learn correctly for yourselves: whether in the desires of the inner self, there is desire existing and being experienced individually? Or not? If that monk slightly remembers the beautiful and lovely signs, that monk slightly remembers the beautiful and lovely signs, the mind will tend to rely, will tend to depend, will fall into dependence, will conform to dependence. For example, a boat must be pulled back from the current with great effort, but if there is not great effort, a little effort will carry it in the direction of the current. Similarly, that monk slightly remembers the beautiful and lovely signs, that monk slightly remembers the beautiful and lovely signs, the mind will tend to rely.

Tending to be close, abiding in closeness, and if it becomes compliant, then, venerable ones, that monk should think thus: 'My mind is afflicted by its own fabrications, close like water, afflicted by the dharmas, not peaceful, not tamed, not finding the path of peace, not becoming focused.' Like this, when I slightly remember the beautiful and pleasing signs, the mind tends to be close, tends to be close, abides in closeness, and will become compliant, one should know this. Venerable ones, that monk should not prophesy thus: 'My mind is free from desire and liberated from these five sensual qualities.' Venerable ones, here, if a monk goes to a solitary place, or under a tree, or to an empty house, he should thus individually and truly learn: 'Am I individually experiencing desire for the desires of my inner self? Or not?' That monk should slightly remember the beautiful and pleasing signs. After the monk remembers the beautiful and pleasing signs, the mind will tend to be secluded, tend to be secluded, abide in seclusion, and will become non-compliant with closeness. Just as if a bird's nest or a ball of thread is put into the fire, it will burn, shrink, and melt, so too, when the monk slightly remembers the beautiful and pleasing signs, the mind will tend to be secluded, tend to be secluded, abide in seclusion, and will become non-compliant with closeness. Venerable ones, that monk should think thus: 'My mind is not afflicted by its own fabrications, not close like water, not afflicted by the dharmas, it is peaceful and tamed, having found the path of peace, and having become focused.' Like this, when I slightly remember the beautiful and pleasing signs, the mind tends to be secluded, tends to be secluded, abides in seclusion, and will become non-compliant with closeness, one should know this. That monk should prophesy: 'My mind is free from desire and liberated from these five sensual qualities.' Thus spoke the Buddha. Why three views?
