The power of knowledge, and the power of the Tathagata's recollection of many past lives, and the power of the Tathagata's knowledge of death, transference, and birth, and the power of the Tathagata's knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements, from here until "He is able to answer questions and make predictions." Monks, the power of knowing what is and what is not is equipoise, and I say it is not non-equipoise. From here, in detail, monks, the power of the exhaustion of defilements is equipoise, and I say it is not non-equipoise. Monks, meditation is the path, and non-meditation is the evil path, so it is said. The Brahmin's statement "everything exists" and so on, the beginning of which is in Shravasti. Then, the Brahmin Nature-Hearer went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he engaged in various joyful and pleasant conversations with the Blessed One, and then sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the Brahmin Nature-Hearer said this to the Blessed One: Gautama, in order to answer questions and make predictions, if you allow, I would like to ask a question that exhausts the ten directions. Brahmin, ask as you wish, and I will make a prediction. Gautama says "everything exists," what does Gautama mean by saying everything exists? Brahmin, therefore I will ask you, please answer truthfully, Brahmin, what do you think? Is there an eye? Gautama answers: Yes, there is. Is there form? Gautama answers: Yes, there is. Is there eye consciousness? Gautama answers: Yes, there is. Is there eye contact? Gautama answers: Yes, there is. Is the feeling that arises from the cause of eye contact, is it pleasure, pain, or neither pleasure nor pain? Gautama answers: Yes, there is. Brahmin, what do you think? Are there ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind? Gautama answers: Yes, there are. Is there dharma? Gautama answers: Yes, there is. Is there mind consciousness? Gautama answers: Yes, there is. Is there mind contact? Gautama answers: Yes, there is. From the cause of mind contact

What is the cause of feelings, whether they are pleasant, painful, or neither pleasant nor painful? Venerable Gautama. These Brahmins say that everything exists, and some Brahmins say this: The ascetic Gautama teaches that everything exists, abandoning that, I will teach that everything exists in another way. Just by speaking, they do not understand the answer to the question, and they cause confusion in the path of questioning. Why is that? Because in any case, that is not their realm. Then, the Brahmin Svanutras (self-nature listeners) were exceedingly delighted and rejoiced in what the Blessed One said, and having risen from their seats, they departed. What is the union of desire? The basis of this discussion is in Nyana. Then the Blessed One called out to the monks, saying: Monks, these four are unions: the union of desire, the union of existence, the union of views, and the union of ignorance. What is the union of desire? Unlearned ordinary people do not know the arising, disappearance, taste, faults, and escape from desires, as they truly are. Because they do not truly know the arising, disappearance, taste, faults, and escape from desires, they have desire for desires, attachment and delight in desires, certainty in desires, longing for desires, being bound by desires, being immersed in desires, and being particularly attached to desires. Their minds are completely attached and abide in this, and this is called the union of desire. Similarly, the union of existence and the union of views should also be spoken of in this way. What is the union of ignorance? Monks, unlearned ordinary people do not truly know the arising, disappearance, taste, faults, and escape from these six sources of contact. They do not truly know the arising, disappearance, and taste of these six sources of consciousness.

And, because one does not fully understand the faults and the departure as they truly are, one does not understand these six sources of contact, and ignorance increases; this is called the union of ignorance. There are also four non-unions. What are the four? They are not uniting with desire, not uniting with existence, not uniting with views, and not uniting with ignorance. What is not uniting with desire? It is that a noble disciple who is endowed with learning fully understands the arising, non-appearance, savoring, faults, and departure of all desires as they truly are. Because he fully understands the arising, non-appearance, savoring, faults, and departure of all desires as they truly are, he does not have desire for desires, attachment, joy in desires, certainty in desires, longing for desires, fainting from desires, infatuation with desires, excessive infatuation with desires, not delighting in desires, or excessive clinging to desires. His mind completely relies on this and does not abide there; this is called not uniting with desire. Not uniting with existence and not uniting with views should also be stated in the same way. What is not uniting with ignorance? It is that a noble disciple who is endowed with learning fully understands the arising, non-appearance, savoring, faults, and departure of these six sources of contact as they truly are. Because he fully understands the arising, non-appearance, savoring, faults, and departure of these six sources of contact as they truly are, he does not fail to understand these six sources of contact, and ignorance does not increase; this is called the absence of the union of ignorance. Furthermore, the Teacher said this: "Union with desire is fully complete, the second is union with existence, union with views is complete, with the union of ignorance as the forerunner, it is difficult to separate and transcend, sentient beings will be born in samsara. Completely abandoning union with desire, likewise, union with existence and union with views are completely abandoned."
