Knowing what is to be known, and what is the notion of immovability, these notions are accomplished by contemplating impermanence and conditioned phenomena, they are dependent arising. Having understood this, one becomes inclined towards nothingness. He understands it in this way, and repeatedly cultivates and abides in it. His mind is delighted with the source, and having delighted his mind, the noble disciple now dwells in nothingness and becomes liberated by wisdom. By cultivating what does consciousness become nothingness? This is the place, there is opportunity. This is the first path shown to approach the source of nothingness. Furthermore, the noble disciple in this place thus individually and correctly learns: In some of my things, there is not even a little. In my things, there is not even a little. Having understood this, one becomes inclined towards nothingness. He understands it in this way, and repeatedly cultivates and abides in it. His mind is delighted with the source, and having delighted his mind, the noble disciple now dwells in the source of nothingness and becomes liberated by wisdom. By cultivating what does consciousness become nothingness? This is the place, there is opportunity. This is the second path shown to approach the source of nothingness. Furthermore, the noble disciple considers the world to be empty. The world is empty, alas, this world is empty. Thus, separately and thoroughly comprehending, it is said that it is empty of permanence, stability, eternity, and unchanging dharmas, and is devoid of self and what belongs to self. Having understood this, one becomes inclined towards the source of nothingness. He understands it in this way, and repeatedly cultivates and abides in it.

And other desires, and whatever is the form of the visible dharma, and other forms, and whatever is the perception of desire of the visible dharma, and whatever is the perception of other desires, and whatever is the perception of form of the visible dharma, and whatever is the perception of other forms, and whatever is the perception of immovability, and whatever is the perception of nothingness, these are impermanent, conditioned, accomplished by thought, and are interdependent origination. Having recognized this, one will be inclined towards the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Having understood it in that way, one will repeatedly cultivate and abide in it. One will generate joy in that realm. Having generated joy, the noble hearer will now abide in the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, and will be liberated by wisdom. If, after cultivation, consciousness approaches the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, this is a place of abiding and there is an opportunity. This is the teaching of the karma of approaching the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. At that time, the venerable Ānanda was behind the Blessed One, holding a fan, fanning the Blessed One. Then, the venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: Venerable sir, if a monk thinks thus: there is no self, there is no mine, may I not arise, may mine not arise, may mine not arise. Venerable sir, will a monk who understands in that way completely attain nirvāṇa in this very visible dharma? Ānanda, it is not certain, some will completely attain nirvāṇa, and some will not attain nirvāṇa. Venerable sir, what is the cause and condition by which some monks who understand in this way completely attain nirvāṇa in this very visible dharma, and some do not completely attain nirvāṇa? Ānanda, if a monk understands thus: there is no self, there is no mine, may I not arise, may mine not arise. Whatever exists and arises, one should abandon and maintain equanimity.

Saying (showing), he clings to and determines to abandon equanimity, Ānanda, this monk is with clinging (upādāna), and will not be completely liberated from suffering in this very visible Dharma. Venerable, in the time of the Arhat Śrāvaka, by what clinging is he with clinging? For example, the peak of existence, that is, the remaining formations of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana). Venerable, in the time of the Arhat Śrāvaka, which clinging is superior by which clinging is he with clinging? This clinging is the main one, for example, the peak of existence, that is, the remaining formations of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Ānanda, it is so, it is so, in the time of the Arhat Śrāvaka, which clinging is superior by which clinging is he with clinging, that clinging is the main one, for example, the peak of existence, that is, the remaining formations of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Ānanda, here, a monk realizes thus: no self, the non-existence of self, may I not arise, may mine not arise, whatever exists and arises, should be abandoned and the practice of abandonment should be attained, he does not taste the flavor of abandonment, does not cling to it, nor does he determine it, Ānanda, this monk is with clinging, and is completely liberated from suffering. Ānanda, by this cause and condition, some monks are completely liberated from suffering in this very visible Dharma, while others are not liberated from suffering. Venerable, the Blessed One has shown the path to immovability, and also shown the path to the realm of nothingness, and also shown the path to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, and also shown liberation from suffering without clinging, Venerable, please show the path of liberation of the Arhat. Ānanda, here, a monk learns separately and truthfully in this way, whether it is desire in the visible Dharma, or desire in the next life, whether it is form in the visible Dharma, or form in the next life, whether it is the...
