, and those arising from meditation. These are called contaminated. In order to distinguish the uncontaminated, the term 'contaminated' is specifically used because only those arising from meditation are of two kinds. This is not a distinction for all. Here, the order of wisdoms arising from hearing and so forth is due to the power of arising. If these distinctions of wisdom are not obtained, the uncontaminated will not arise. The characteristics of these are: the wisdoms arising from hearing and so forth are those that have both name and meaning as their objects. This will be explained. The term 'birth-place obtained' means that which is obtained and possessed by birth, and not that which arises from effort. Just as above, upon being born in the desire realm, one obtains afflictions and near afflictions. The explicit statement 'accompanied by' also applies to those arising from hearing and so forth. Thus, just as the birth-obtained accompanied by is the nature of the four aggregates, so too are those arising from hearing and those arising from contemplation. Those arising from meditation are the five aggregates, because in the proximity, dhyana, and special dhyana there is the discipline of dhyana. In the proximity and the formless realms, they are the four aggregates. The treatises, such as those that enter into wisdom, are also the nature of the collection of names, words, and letters, and therefore are the nature of non-associated compositional factors, and because they are the nature of words, they are the nature of sound. As it is said: 'Words or names, they are all included in form and compositional factors.' Others say that here also the retinue is mentioned, and from the subsequent inference, the treatises are also two aggregates or one aggregate. Therefore, it also turns in that direction, so it is called Abhidharma. Therefore, this clearly shows that it is a mere designation. The cause of Abhidharma is Abhidharma, just as yogurt and mustard are obvious mustard. Just as saying that dropsy water is a leg disease, the cause of a disease is called a disease. There are two usages of sounds: primary and secondary. That which becomes a collection is that which becomes a cause, as appropriate.

It should be understood through direct and indirect means. If one cannot express the form of words such as entering into wisdom without the wisdom gained from birth, then through direct and indirect means, it will become a collection of uncontaminated wisdom, just as one considers that which is gained from birth to be Dharma. Because treatises also clarify the meaning, they become a collection of wisdom arising from hearing, etc., through direct or indirect means, and are therefore called Dharma. If that is the case, then wouldn't all the forms of the Tathagata's speech, such as the Sutras, become Dharma itself, since they are a collection of uncontaminated wisdom? Although that is the case, the Sutras mostly tend towards the thoughts of those to be tamed, the Vinaya is distinguished by its occurrence, and the Abhidharma solely tends towards the characteristics of Dharma, hence it is named Abhidharma only for that reason. Therefore, it will not become something else. In definitive terms, 'na' and so on are words that are definitely separated and determined, and are concluding words that explain the reason for naming. Because it holds its own characteristics, it is Dharma. If it becomes too extreme, what should be done? Because of desire, there is no fault. According to our view, everything does not transcend the nature of Dharma because it holds its own characteristics. Therefore, this is called the ultimate Dharma and so on. The word 'supreme' is a synonym for excellence. The word 'meaning' is a synonym for knowable. The word 'Dharma' is a synonym for object. The ultimate Dharma means the object of knowledge that has arisen supremely. What is it again? Therefore, Nirvana is mentioned, and the word 'or' means distinction. Nirvana is the most excellent of all conditioned and unconditioned Dharmas because of its goodness and purity. In another way, 'supreme' is the wisdom that transcends the world. Its meaning is ultimate. Suffering, origin, and path are also its meaning, therefore Nirvana is mentioned. Alternatively, the word 'meaning' is
