Space is the nature of being un-obstructed. Because it is not the object of manifestation, it does not obstruct other things, it is not merely the absence of obstruction by subsequent inference. For that very reason, it is explained: where there is space for form. If whatever does not obstruct or is not to be obstructed is space, then unobstructed formations such as mind would also become space in the same way. If you say so, it will not become space because other things have obstruction. Those who possess magical powers, by the power of mind and mental factors, obstruct the movement or mind etc. of others. If so, would cessation through individual analysis and cessation not through individual analysis become space because they do not obstruct? No, because those that combine with existent substances and unborn dharmas will necessarily prevent combination, and being the obstacle to birth, is the nature of obstruction. In another way, if the characteristic is only un-obstructed, and that characteristic is space, then these two also have other characteristics, because there is obstruction, they will not become space. If so, then if space is un-obstructed and exists, and if it exists then it does not, then it will become something that is not everywhere or impermanent. Because walls etc. are obstructed by other forms, there is no characteristic of space there, so it would be inferred that there is no space. Moreover, when there are no walls etc., it will also exist, so it will become impermanent. If you say so, even there, because walls etc. can make space, space exists. If there is no space there, because there is no giving way, the walls etc. themselves will not exist. There, other forms cannot exist because they are obstructed by walls etc., not because there is no space. The Blessed One also said: Hey, Gautama, what does the earth rely on? Brahmin, the earth relies on water. Hey, Gautama, what does water rely on? Brahmin, water relies on wind. Hey, Gautama, what does wind rely on? Brahmin, wind relies on space. Hey, Gautama, what does space rely on? Brahmin, absolutely nothing.

Therefore, the Brahmins widely proclaimed that space is without support, without manifestation, and without object. The Vaibhashikas say that therefore space exists. Because "separation" is particularly emphasized, it is prevented by impermanence itself, and because it is not a cessation through separate examination, cessation is excluded. These cessations are not merely the characteristics of separation. Non-association is separation, which is the characteristic of not being associated with afflictions. On the other hand, whatever dharma that necessarily prevents what will become associated is a cessation through separate examination. Because the noble truths such as suffering are specifically mentioned, separate examination is considered to be only unpolluted wisdom, and worldly wisdom is not characterized by the aspects of the truth of suffering, etc. What is it then? It is the aspects of peace and coarseness in the upper and lower realms. The distinction of wisdom is mentioned because the distinction is specifically mentioned, so it is considered to be the wisdom of the path of no interval that abandons afflictions. The cessation to be attained by the distinction of wisdom is the cessation through separate examination, just as a king who likes leaves is called the king of leaves, because the intermediate words are not manifest. If it is considered that the cessation through separate examination is only unpolluted wisdom, then since the cessation to be attained by the worldly path is not included, will it become a non-pervasive definition? It is not non-pervasive, because unpolluted wisdom can obtain the cessation of all polluted things, the three realms. If there is a cessation that can only be obtained through worldly wisdom and not through unpolluted wisdom, then what is the need for worldly wisdom? Because some cessations are not obtained through the worldly path, but through the transcendental path. Therefore, only the transcendental path is wisdom, not the worldly path. The Vaibhashikas say that the cessation through separate designation is real, because it shows the four noble truths, just like the truth of the path. Each is each.
