This teaching about the past is what brings oneself closer, therefore it is said that only the fourth dhyana was taught. The chapter on samadhi has been explained. Now is the chapter on the merits that depend on samadhi, so these should be explained. The immeasurables are four: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, because they are focused on immeasurable sentient beings. Why are there only four? Because they are the antidotes to hatred and so on. In order to abandon hatred, harm, displeasure, desire, and many hatreds, they are equal in number to the four. Loving-kindness is without hatred. The nature of loving-kindness is without hatred. Compassion is also the same. Mental ease is joy. The nature of joy is mental ease. Equanimity is the nature of non-attachment. How is it an antidote to hatred? Because it is led by attachment. The aspects of loving-kindness and so on are: Alas, happiness and suffering, joy and sentient beings. Thinking in the mind, "May sentient beings be happy," and abiding in loving-kindness. Thinking, "Alas, sentient beings suffer," this is compassion. Thinking, "May sentient beings be joyful," this is joy. Thinking, "They are sentient beings," and abiding in equanimity, because it is abiding in the middle. The aspects of these have been explained. The realm of activity is sentient beings in desire. Their object is: sentient beings who act in desire, because focusing on this is the antidote to hatred and so on. In which grounds are they located? Joy is in the second dhyana. Joy is mental ease, therefore it exists in the first and second dhyanas. The others are in six grounds. The other three immeasurables exist in the six grounds, the formless realms, and dhyana and special dhyana. Some think in five. Some think that except for the formless realms, they exist in the five grounds. Since it has been said that they are the antidotes to hatred and so on, can the immeasurables also abandon afflictions? It does not abandon the actual dhyana.

It is the place of abiding in that, the place of believing and thinking, and because it is focused on sentient beings. By practicing these, one can suppress anger and the like, and stabilize what has already been abandoned, therefore they are said to be the antidotes to those. These four immeasurables arise only among humans, only among humans, and not in others. If one possesses one immeasurable, is it certain that one possesses all of them? Answer: One certainly possesses three. Those born in the third and fourth dhyanas do not possess joy, but they always possess the attainment of the three immeasurables. Among the eight liberations, that which is called "seeing forms as forms" is the first liberation. Seeing external forms with the perception of no form is the second liberation. The third is abiding, having realized and perfected the impure liberation with the body. These and the four formless ones, and the eighth, the cessation of perception and feeling. The first two of these, the impure and the liberation, the first two are of the nature of the impure because of the aspect of transformation and so on, therefore the nature of those two should be understood as impure. Those two are also in the two dhyanas, the first and second dhyanas, but not in other grounds. For those who practice in the desire realm and the color desire of the first dhyana ground, the antidotes are according to their number. At the third extreme, the impure liberation is only in the fourth dhyana. That is not attachment. That is also of the nature of non-attachment, but because it is of the nature of the impure, it is not of the nature of the impure. Those with their retinue are of the nature of the five aggregates. The formless liberations are the virtuous formless samadhis. Only the virtuous one who abides in the formless attains the name liberation, not the afflicted one, nor the non-abiding one, such as in the state of death. Others say that there are also non-abiding ones in others. The paths of liberation of proximity also attain the name liberation.
