Earth. One has half a krosha and a quarter. Its four sides each have half a krosha and a quarter. Therefore, this is like a great chariot. The eastern Videha is like a crescent moon. From here, opposite the eastern Mount Meru, is the eastern Videha continent, which appears as a crescent moon. The width is the same as these three faces. Just as Jambudvipa has two thousand two hundred krosas. One has three hundred and fifty krosas. The four faces each have three hundred and fifty krosas. Godaniya is round, with seven thousand five hundred krosas. From here, opposite the western Mount Meru, is Godaniya, with seven thousand five hundred krosas. It is completely round like a full moon, its center has three thousand five hundred krosas. The water width is also three thousand five hundred krosas. Uttarakuru's eight faces are all square. From here, opposite the northern Mount Meru, is the northern Uttarakuru continent, with a total of eight thousand krosas. The shape is square like a table, just as one face has two thousand krosas, the other faces are the same, with no remainder. Whatever the shape of a continent, the shape of the faces of the people living there is also the same. Furthermore, what are the intermediate continents that appear in between these continents? How many are there? There are eight intermediate continents: Deha and Videha, Kuru and the moon of Kuru, Chamara and another Chamara, Dhanin and Vipatha. Among them, Deha and Videha are the retinue of the eastern Videha continent. Kuru and the moon of Kuru are the retinue of the northern Uttarakuru continent. Dhanin and Vipatha are the retinue of the western Godaniya continent. Chamara and another Chamara are the retinue of Jambudvipa. All these continents are inhabited by people. Some say that some continents are inhabited by Rakshasas. From here to the north is the Black Mountain. After nine mountains is the Snow Mountain. To the north of this Jambudvipa, this Jambudvipa itself has three Black Mountains. After these mountains there are three more mountains, and after those mountains there are three more mountains.

Oh! Beyond the nine black mountains, there is a snow mountain! From there, on this side where fragrance emanates, there is a lake with a width of fifty yojanas. On the opposite side of that snow mountain, on this side where the fragrance of incense emanates, there exists a lake called Matroza, from which flow the four great rivers: the Ganges, the Indus, the Sita, and the Pakshu. The width of that lake is also fifty yojanas, and the depth of the water is also fifty yojanas, filled with water possessing eight qualities. There, it is difficult for people without magical powers to pass. Near that lake, a tree called the Jambu tree grows, bearing sweet fruits. Therefore, this is known as Jambudvipa. Or, it is called Jambudvipa because of that fruit. Where are the hells located? And what is their size? Twenty thousand yojanas below this, there is the Avici hell, that is how large it is. Twenty thousand yojanas below this Jambudvipa, there is the great Avici hell, with a height and width of twenty thousand yojanas. The foundation below it is also the same, measuring forty thousand yojanas from here. Because the suffering is uninterrupted, it is Avici. Other hells have interruptions in their suffering. For example, in the Sañjīva hell, the bodies are cut and pierced, but when cold winds rise, those beings are revived, therefore it is Sañjīva. Others say that there is no state of happiness there, so it is Avici. Still others say that there is no (happiness) arising from the maturation of pleasant feelings, but the (suffering) arising from similar causes is without cessation. Above that, there are seven hells. Above that Avici hell, there are seven hells: Tapana, Atapana, Mahāraurava, Raurava, Samghata, Kālasūtra, and Sañjīva, arranged one above the other. Others say that they are located in the corners of Avici hell. Those hells, all eight of them, have sixteen neighboring hells. The Blessed One said: Thus, those hells are called the eight great hells, difficult to overcome, filled with fierce karma. Each hell has sixteen neighboring hells, with four walls and four gates, divided into different areas. They are surrounded by iron walls and filled with iron.
