Others say that just as happiness arises from drinking alcohol, so too does the feeling of fullness arise from desire, being a particular kind of universal joy. All phenomena arising from the mind have been explained, each in its own way, along with the mind itself. In the scriptures, these names are used to express these concepts, so these names are mentioned: mind, intellect, and consciousness are the same in meaning but different in function, so it is called mind. Because it knows, it is called intellect. Because it distinguishes, it is called consciousness. Some say that because it accumulates the realms of virtue and non-virtue, it is called mind. That which serves as its basis is called intellect. That which becomes the basis is called consciousness. Just as the terms mind, intellect, and consciousness have the same meaning, so too do mind and mental factors, as well as basis, object, aspect, and association, have the same meaning. Mind and mental factors are called having a basis because they rely on the senses. They are called having an object because they grasp an object. They are called having an aspect because they distinguish each aspect of the object itself. They are called associated because they are jointly associated. In what ways are they associated? In five ways. These five associations are association through the same basis, object, aspect, time, and substance. What is the same substance? Just as there is only one mind, so too is there only one of each mental factor. The detailed and extensive explanation of mind and mental factors has been given. Non-associated compositional factors are: attainment and non-attainment, homogeneity, cessation of perception, life force and characteristics, and collections of names, etc. These factors are neither associated with the mind nor like form, so they are called phenomena that are not associated with the mind. Among these, attainment means obtaining and possessing. There are two types of attainment: obtaining from not having obtained and from complete loss, and possessing after obtaining. The opposite is established as non-attainment. To whom do attainment and non-attainment belong? They belong to those who possess attainment and non-attainment and continuity. They do not belong to the continuity of other beings, because they are contrary to other beings.

There is not. It is not separate from those that are not separate from the continuum, those that are not counted as sentient beings, and it does not correspond to anything. This is temporarily the determination of the unconditioned. The attainment and non-attainment of the unconditioned are: the two cessations, cessation not by individual analysis, correspond to all sentient beings. Therefore, in the Abhidharma, it says, "Who corresponds to the uncontaminated dharmas?" The answer is, "All sentient beings." It is said that this is the case. Cessation by individual analysis, and corresponding to all bonds, except for those who are in the first moment, all noble ones, and some ordinary beings as well. It does not correspond to anything with space. Therefore, there is no attainment for this. For those who have no attainment, there is also no non-attainment, this is the established tenet. What is called "attainment" means that there is a slight other substance, where does this come from? The answer is, from the sutras. The sutras say in detail that by generating these ten non-learning dharmas, and individually attaining them, because of complete correspondence, one becomes a noble one who has abandoned the five branches. Then, it will also correspond to those who do not rely on sentient beings, and to other sentient beings, why? Because the sutras say in detail, monks, the wheel-turning king possesses the seven precious things. There, the power is said to be the meaning of correspondence, because he has power over those seven precious things and rejoices. There, correspondence is power, and elsewhere it is another thing. From these, even so, what is wrong with that? There are these things that are not right, because like form and sound, etc., or like desire and hatred, etc., the nature of this does not appear, and like the eyes and ears, etc., the function does not appear, therefore, it is impossible as a factual dharma, so it is not right. If it is said that the cause of the arising of dharmas is attainment, then it will become non-unconditioned. Those dharmas that have not been attained, and those that have changed realms, and the equanimity that has been abandoned due to detachment, how will those arise? Or is it the cause and condition of co-emergent attainment? Then, its
