What is the difference between joy and respect? Having mentioned joy, there are two kinds of joy: afflicted and non-afflicted. Among them, the afflicted is existence, such as joy towards sons and wives, etc. Non-afflicted is faith, such as joy towards the teacher, the lama, and those with qualities. There is also faith that is not joy, such as faith aimed at suffering and its origin. There is also joy that is not faith, such as afflicted joy. Both are present, such as faith aimed at cessation and the path. Neither is present, except for those forms. From the perspective of individuals, joy without respect is like joy towards sons and wives, as well as those who live together and attendants. Respect without joy is like respect towards other lamas. Both are present, like respect towards one's own lamas. Neither is present, except for those forms. Others say that faith is trusting in qualities, and the joy that precedes it is joy, so it is joy itself. Respect itself is knowing shame. Respect is knowing shame as it has been said. Others say that respect is being accompanied by reverence, and the hesitation that precedes it is knowing shame, therefore respect itself is not knowing shame. Those two in the desire and form realms, in the formless realm there is no joy and respect. Since faith and knowing shame are many grounds of virtue, are they not also present there? There are two kinds of faith: faith in things and faith in persons, and being accompanied by reverence is also the same. Among them, those faith and knowing shame aimed at persons are not there, here we are considering those joy and respect. What is the difference between conception and discernment? Conception and discernment are coarseness and subtlety themselves. What is the coarseness and subtlety of? It is the coarseness and subtlety of the mind, which will be explained below. Conception is the coarse mind. Discernment is the subtle mind. How can one mind have both? Some say, for example, butter

Just as earth thrown into water does not freeze too much or melt too much when touched by the sun's rays from above, so too, the mind, because it possesses thought and analysis, does not become too subtle or too coarse, and it also has the function of both, so they say. If that is the case, just as the sun and water are the cause of the earth freezing and melting, but are not their essence, so too, thought and analysis become the cause of coarseness and subtlety. Because coarseness and subtlety are also relative depending on the difference in form, thought and analysis will exist up to the peak of existence. It is also unreasonable to consider them as having different natures merely because of coarseness and subtlety. Others say that the sutras state that thought and analysis are the manifest activity of speech; one speaks words after thinking and analyzing, and not without thinking and analyzing. Those that are coarse are thought, and those that are subtle are analysis, so they say. If, when the mind is focused on one point, coarseness is also a different phenomenon and subtlety is also a different phenomenon, then what contradiction is there in this? If it is a different type, like feeling and perception, then there is no contradiction. It is impossible for the same type to occur simultaneously as small and large. There are also different types. Then it must be explained. It is difficult to explain, therefore it is clarified by means of smallness and greatness. If that is the case, it will not be clear, because each type has smallness and greatness. Others say that thought and analysis do not occur in one mind. Now, how is the first dhyana explained in terms of its limbs? The sutras explain it as having five limbs, not in an instant. What is the difference between pride and arrogance? Pride, conceit, and arrogance are: the mind is completely attached to its own qualities. Pride is when the mind becomes conceited after fully examining any difference from others. Arrogance is when the mind is completely attached to only its own qualities.
