The field becomes barren, even to the point of becoming extremely barren, and in the end, it does not continuously remain so. This is caused by factors related to fire. Therefore, things do not have a cause for destruction, but rather they themselves possess the nature of destruction. Because destruction occurs merely at the moment of arising, it is established that these things are destroyed in an instant. Because they are destroyed in an instant, there is also no movement. Appearing to cling in other places is merely showing off the pride of movement, like a fire on grass. If there is no movement, then the way the body manifests, which is shape, is considered to be established. The Sautrāntikas say that shape is not real. When color appears predominantly in one direction, it is called a long shape. Relative to that, when it appears in small amounts, it is called short. When it appears in large amounts in four directions, it is called square. When it is equal in all directions, it is called round, and all of these are similar to that. For example, when a torch quickly appears to cling in another direction, it is thought to be long. When it appears in all directions, it is thought to be round, but shape as a real, other existence does not exist. If it did exist, it would become perceptible by both. When the eye sees it, it will also be thought to be long, and when the body's senses touch it, it will also be known. In this way, this thing becomes perceptible by two senses, but in the sphere of form, there is no perception by two. Or, just as touch is perceived as long, etc., color should also be believed in the same way. For color, it is merely a memory arising from acting together with touch, not a direct perception. For example, seeing the shape of fire, a memory of its heat arises, and smelling the fragrance of a flower, a memory of its color arises. Regarding this, because there is no confusion, one thing can be recalled by another, but from what can this be definitely recalled? From touch, there is no definite knowledge of any shape at all. However, even if it is not certain whether they act together, if it is certain that shape will be recalled, then color will also be recalled. Or, just like color, shape will certainly not change.

If that is not the case, then it is unreasonable to remember this from tactile sensation. Because when depicted with lines, various shapes appear, and if many things also become a single whole, that is also unreasonable, just like color. Therefore, shape is not a substance. If any slightly obstructive form must exist in minute particles, then it does not exist in dust, because shapes such as length do not exist in minute particles. Therefore, shape is merely the imputation of names such as length onto the many things that exist in that way. If one wants to impute names such as length onto the minute particles of shape that exist in that way, then because those are not established, that is merely biased attachment. If their own characteristics were established, then those accumulated would become a little, but if the parts of shape, like color and so on, do not have their own nature established, then how could there be those accumulations? If someone asks: How is it that pottery vessels have different colors and shapes appear to be different? Has it not already been said that names such as length are merely imputed onto the color that exists in a certain way? For example, just as ants and so on, although not the same, are given different names such as wheels, shape is also similar to that. If someone asks: How is it that in dark caves and distant places, one cannot see the color of tree trunks and so on, but one can see shapes such as length? This is because one only sees those indistinct colors and completely speculates them to be shapes such as length, just like speculating them to be rosaries and armies and so on. This must be understood in this way, because sometimes one cannot definitely grasp what is completely cut off, but it only appears as an aggregate and indistinct. Furthermore, now according to the views of you Sautrāntikas, the movement and shape of the body are also refuted, so on what do you impute the expression of the body? They only impute the expression of the body on shape, but not as a substance. When imputing it, how do you impute it as the action of the body? The action that relies on the body is the action of the body, which is the mind that causes the body to enter there and there. Similarly, the actions of speech and mind are also
