One rainy season. When the sound of the Uttarakuru is not pleasing, and it is midnight, then in the east, in Videha, the sun sets. In Jambudvipa, it is noon. In Godaniya, the sun rises. Similarly, it should be applied to other places as well. Due to the difference in the movement of the sun, here the days and nights become long or short. Regarding this, from the ninth day of the end of the second month of summer, the night becomes long. The second month of summer, that is, from the ninth day of the waxing moon of the last summer month, the night becomes long. In the fourth month of winter, it becomes short. Similarly, from the ninth day of the end of the fourth month of winter, it becomes short, it should be compared like this, that is, from the ninth day of the waxing moon of the last winter month. The day is the opposite. When the night becomes long, then the day becomes short. When the night becomes short, then the day becomes long. By how much does it become long? Day and night, the night becomes longer by one 'thang'. Day or night becomes longer by one 'thang' each. Those lengthenings are also in order, when the sun moves north and south. When the sun moves to the south side of Jambudvipa, the night becomes long. When it moves to the north side, the day becomes long. The moon of the first month of the waxing moon, the lunar disc appears incomplete, what is the reason for that? Because of being close to the sun, it appears incomplete because it is obscured by its own shadow. It is said in the scriptures that when the palace of the moon moves close to the palace of the sun, the light of the sun shines on the palace of the moon, therefore, its outer surface is obscured by the shadow, so the lunar disc appears incomplete, so it is said. Former teachers said that sometimes half of the palace appears, that kind of situation is the way of movement. Also, in these palaces of the sun and so on, which beings reside? The gods belonging to the Four Great Kings. Is it only them? Those who reside in the palaces are these. Those who reside on the ground are the levels of Mount Meru and so on. How many levels are there here? How far is the distance? There are four levels here, the distance in between is ten thousand.

There is one behind the throne, and it is the same between the four. Those reach less than half of Mount Sumeru. Those also from there according to the number, the thousands are sixteen, eight and four and two stand out. The first tier is sixteen thousand yojanas higher than Mount Sumeru. The second is eight. The third is four. The fourth is two. There reside those holding trays, those holding garlands, and the perpetually intoxicated, and the gods of the Four Great Kings. On the first tier reside the yakshas called tray-holders. On the second reside the garland-holders. On the third reside the perpetually intoxicated, all these gods are retinues of the Four Great Kings. On the fourth reside the Four Great Kings themselves and their retinues, therefore they are called the gods of the Four Great Kings. Just as the gods of the retinues of the Four Great Kings are on the tiers from A to Pa, so also on the seven mountains, in places such as Yoke-Bearing Mountain, there are also their towns and villages, therefore that divine race is greater than all. On the summit of Mount Sumeru are the Thirty-three (gods). Also, how large is the summit of Mount Sumeru? Its surface is eighty thousand. How is it downwards, each surface is also eighty thousand. Others say that its surface is twenty thousand. It is said that this has four surfaces and four directions, and each surface is also twenty thousand yojanas, and if you go around it is eighty thousand. At the accumulation of the four corners, Vajrapani resides. The four corners of the summit of Mount Sumeru are square, and from those places four are piled up upwards by the amount of five hundred yojanas, and in those places reside the yakshas called Vajrapani. In the center of the summit of Mount Sumeru, there is the city Good to See, the surface has two thousand five hundred, the height is two and a half yojanas, the nature of gold, the ground is decorated and soft.

Having leveled it, the ground there is as soft to the touch as a cottonwood petal, and when one places and lifts one's foot, it makes the sounds "Nanem" and "Par." It is very magnificent there. The area is two hundred and fifty yojanas. In the center of the city is the palace of Indra, lord of the gods, called "Victorious in Every Way," which is magnificent and endowed with various jewels and places, and is the most glorious of all other abodes. It radiates light, and each side is two hundred and fifty yojanas wide. For the time being, this is the manifest joy of the city. Outside are various vehicles, Roughness, mixture, adorned with joy. On the four outer sides of that city are four pleasure gardens for the gods, namely: a garden with various vehicles, a rough garden, a mixed garden, and a joyful garden. They adorn the outskirts of that city. On the four sides of those gardens, demarcated by twenty yojanas, are four beautiful places of amusement, as beautiful as if competing with each other. On the outer side of the city, in the northeast corner is "Complete Gathering," and in the southwest corner is "Good Dharma." There is a tree called "Born from the Earth, Complete Gathering," which is the supreme place of enjoyment for the thirty-three gods. Its roots penetrate fifty yojanas into the ground, and its trunk rises one hundred yojanas into the sky. Its branches, leaves, and canopy cover fifty yojanas. When its flowers and petals are in full bloom, the fragrance wafts one hundred yojanas downwind and fifty yojanas upwind. For the time being, how does one distinguish between downwind and upwind? Some say that this is because the fragrance does not extend beyond the tree. It is not that the fragrance cannot travel upwind, but that the intensity of the fragrance is blocked by the faint heavenly wind, so that other fragrances can also spread. Because the fragrance becomes faint, very faint, and extremely faint, it can only quickly dissipate completely.
