If the nature of the (twelve) ayatanas is like this, then why is one called the Dharma-ayatana? Answer: Because of the meaning of distinction and the meaning of main, because it collects many dharmas and excellent dharmas, it is said that one is the Rupa-ayatana and one is the Dharma-ayatana. What is the meaning of distinction? It is to be understood that, in any case, from the perspective of establishing as object and subject, these ten are each their own ayatana, not a general one. For things that have been distinguished as eye, etc., whatever is not named as eye, etc., but is Rupa, know that it is the Rupa-ayatana, so no other name is given to it. Or, the Rupa-ayatana is the main one, because it is obstructive, because the touch of the aggregation of hands, etc., can be touched, and it can be indicated, because it can be determined "this is here, in a certain place". The world also calls it Rupa, not others. Only because of the meaning of distinction, it is said that one is the Dharma-ayatana, not all. Furthermore, here, many dharmas such as feeling are collected, therefore, the word Dharma is used to express generally. The excellent Nirvana of Dharma is also collected here, not in other places. Some say that because there are twenty kinds of wisdom, as well as the realm of action of the flesh eye, the divine eye, the wisdom eye of the noble ones, and the three eyes, it is said that one is the Rupa-ayatana. If the sutras also point out other things such as skandhas, ayatanas, and dhatus, then, should it be known that those are collected by these, or are there other differences? Answer: They are collected by these, there are no other differences, for this, first of all, the eighty-four thousand Dharma-skandhas, all those spoken by the capable one, if they are words or names, are all contained in the Rupa-skandha and the Samskara-skandha. According to which (reasons), the Buddha's words are the nature of words, according to those (reasons), those are collected by the Rupa-skandha. According to which (reasons) they are the nature of names, according to those (reasons) they are collected by the Samskara-skandha. So, what is the amount of Dharma-skandhas? Some say it is treatises.

It is called "extent." Some say that it is only the extent of the treatise called "Dharma Skandha," which is six thousand shlokas. Others say, "Skandha, etc., are just a saying." They say that each story of skandha, ayatana, dhatu, dependent origination, truth, food, meditation, immeasurable, formless, liberation, overcoming birth, pervasive birth, aspects in harmony with enlightenment, supernormal knowledge, correct knowledge, wishful knowledge, absence of affliction, etc., is a Dharma Skandha. As an antidote to all actions, the Dharma Skandha is said to be corresponding. It is said that sentient beings have eighty-four thousand different actions such as desire, hatred, ignorance, and pride. To counteract these, the Blessed One spoke of eighty-four thousand Dharma Skandhas. How are these eighty-four thousand Dharma Skandhas condensed into these five skandhas? Similarly, others should also be reasonable. Skandha, ayatana, and dhatu should be well analyzed for their respective characteristics, and they should be summarized as stated. The skandhas, ayatanas, and dhatus mentioned in other sutras should also be well analyzed for their respective characteristics as stated in this treatise, and then summarized into the skandhas, etc., as mentioned above. Among them, regarding the skandha of morality, the skandha of concentration, the skandha of wisdom, the skandha of liberation, and the skandha of the knowledge and vision of liberation, the skandha of morality is included in the skandha of form, and the rest are included in the skandha of formation. Eight of the ten pervasive births are included in the Dharma ayatana because they are of the nature of non-attachment. If accompanied by retinues, they are included in the mind ayatana and the Dharma ayatana because they are of the nature of the five skandhas. The overcoming births are also similar to this. The infinite space birth and the infinite consciousness birth, as well as the four, such as the infinite space birth, are the four skandhas.
