Because the abiding one is always virtuous by nature, it causes the actions of body and speech to be completely purified. Having skillful means refers to relying on the four objects of gathering to cause sentient beings to engage in virtuous actions of body and speech. The discipline of a noble person is because it is solely the conduct of a noble person. This has five aspects: oneself also possessing discipline; also causing other beings to take up pure discipline; also proclaiming the praise of discipline; feeling joy in one's heart upon seeing a person who is in accordance with the Dharma; and if a fault occurs, quickly confessing it according to the Dharma. Discipline of all kinds is because it has great significance. This has thirteen aspects: because it is completely dedicated to great Bodhi, it is unsurpassed; because it completely upholds the vast field of learning, it is clear; because it abandons the two extremes of the merit of desire and causing oneself to be weary, it is without fault; it is in accordance with the place of great joy; because one does not give up learning until the end of life, it is constant; because it is not overwhelmed or stolen by gain, respect, the attacks of others, afflictions, and near afflictions, it is stable; because it is not adorned with the ornament of prideful nature, and because one adorns oneself with the ornament of discipline at all times and places, it is adorned with the ornament of discipline; because it abandons killing and so forth, it is the discipline of cessation; because it accumulates virtue and engages in benefiting sentient beings, it is the discipline of entering and, in order to follow and protect, it is the discipline of completely protecting; it is the cause of the maturation of the marks of a great person; it is the cause of the maturation of higher mind; it is the cause of the maturation of bad migrations; it is the cause of the maturation of benefiting sentient beings. The discipline of abandoning poverty is because it has the meaning of dispelling poverty. Here, the Bodhisattva thinks thus: Like this, who would take my life, take what is not given, engage in sexual misconduct with desires, speak false words, slander, harsh words, idle chatter

Speaking harsh words, and touching with hands, feet, etc., and touching in ways that cause harm, not wanting these actions to be universally practiced, I wish in this way. If I wish in this way, but others wrongly practice these actions, that will make me unhappy. Similarly, if others also wish in this way, but I wrongly practice these actions, that will make them unhappy. Since those actions that will make both me and others unhappy, why should they be practiced on others? Having considered individually in this way, even for the sake of life, one should not practice those eight kinds of unpleasant actions on others. The discipline that leads to happiness in this life and the next is because it will cause happiness for myself and others in this life and other lives. This again has nine aspects: preventing those beings who should be prevented, allowing those who should be allowed, gathering those beings who should be gathered, punishing those who should be punished, thereby making the actions of body and speech completely pure. Possessing generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, these themselves and others, will lead to happiness in this life and the next. Completely pure discipline is completely pure because it has washed away everything. This has ten aspects: the discipline of a renunciate, which is for the sake of wanting perfect enlightenment, not for the sake of wanting to live, having taken it well from the very beginning, not regretting small faults that have been committed, therefore not being too discouraged; not regretting things that should not be regretted, therefore not being too indulgent; not enjoying the pleasure of sleep, the pleasure of idle talk, and the pleasure of lying down; being diligent in virtuous activities day and night, therefore not being lazy; being completely possessed by mindfulness because of relying on the mindfulness of the five limbs previously mentioned; not being attached to gain and respect; because one has not vowed to become a god, one has not vowed to abide in pure conduct, but has made good aspirations; conduct and immediate actions, and good
