For matters whose meaning is not fully realized, allow them to relinquish the intermediate state. Regarding things not done, recognize that one must relinquish the pride of appearing to have done them. This is the meaning of abiding, transforming, and abandoning. Therefore, one must correctly demonstrate the five aspects of following: prohibiting actions accompanied by faults; permitting actions without faults; encouraging those who act contrary to the laws of prohibition and permission; for those who repeatedly become disrespectful and err, reproaching them with beneficial thoughts and causing them to remember; and for those who have correctly entered, causing them to rejoice by proclaiming the merits and joys of the laws of prohibition and permission. All these methods are for completely gathering the assembly, thereby avoiding all meaningless things and completely abandoning unpleasant behaviors. One must accord with the minds of others. If one wishes to accord with the minds of others, one must first understand their essence and nature, and then abide with them as one would abide with them. One must treat them as one would treat them. For those who wish to accord with their minds, one must, through bodily and verbal actions that are in accordance with them, share their suffering and displeasure, and through this suffering and displeasure, liberate them from the state of non-virtue. If one cannot place them in a state of virtue, then the Bodhisattva will separately examine, carefully and completely abandon, and not act. If one sees that this suffering and displeasure can liberate them from the state of non-virtue and place them in a state of virtue, then one should act, approaching them with compassion, but not according with the minds of others. Any bodily and verbal actions that cause others suffering and displeasure, and those who are liberated from the state of non-virtue, etc., just as before, accord with the minds of those who are different from them.

In order to be in harmony (with others), one does not do (certain things), up to the end (of this section). If others, too, act as before, starting from "from non-virtuous states," then do not hold them with a mind of compassion, nor keep in accord with their thoughts. If one sees that one's own bodily and verbal actions cause suffering and displeasure to others, and that such actions do not belong to the basis of practice, nor are they an accumulation of unsurpassed merit and wisdom, then such suffering and displeasure, too, are like before, starting from "from non-virtuous states," and in order to be in accord with the thoughts of others, one does not do them. If this action belongs to the basis of practice and also belongs to what should be abandoned, and such suffering and displeasure, too, are like before, starting from "from non-virtuous states," then do not do it out of compassion for others. Similarly, happiness and pleasure are similar to this, and should be understood as fully as possible. When being in harmony with others, do not openly praise until the other person's anger has completely subsided, not even with hints, let alone direct praise. If one speaks to those who do not speak and makes them truly happy, then how much more so to make those who speak truly happy. Never confuse others, otherwise, it is only out of compassion for them that one wants to rebuke them, rebuking them by completely pacifying the senses. Do not ridicule others, do not despise others, nor make others feel uneasy. Because one is not attached to the feeling of happiness, one does not generate regret. For those who have already been punished and rebuked, do not bring up the reason for the punishment again. Do not show yourself off to those who have little joy. Do not distrust others, nor trust them excessively, nor trust them at inappropriate times. Do not slander friends in front of them, nor slander unfriendly people.

Praise is not spoken either. One does not trust those who are unfamiliar. One does not beg frequently either. One knows moderation in receiving. Even if invited as a guest for food and drink, one does not refuse. Or, one disciplines with a whip in accordance with the Dharma. This is to be in accord with the minds of others in every way. If one closely examines the distinctions of genuine qualities, one makes others genuinely happy by clearly showing them. Just as one makes all others happy through genuine qualities, one makes those who possess qualities such as faith, discipline, learning, generosity, and wisdom genuinely happy with words related to them. This is to make them genuinely happy in every way. To awaken others from non-virtuous states and place them in virtuous states, one rebukes with gentleness and a beneficial mind, or one performs the act of disciplining through punishment, cutting off, or expulsion. For small offenses, one rebukes with small rebukes. For medium offenses, one rebukes with medium rebukes. For large offenses, one rebukes with large rebukes. The act of punishment should also be understood in the same way. For the act of expulsion, for small and medium offenses, one expels temporarily and then expels in a way that allows for recall. For large offenses, because of compassion for them, in order to prevent them from accumulating excessive non-merit, and to demonstrate for the benefit of others, one expels in a way that they will not be recalled until the end of their lives, and one does not allow them to enjoy possessions. These are to discipline in every way. If one wishes to frighten others with the power of miracles, for those beings who intend to engage in evil deeds, one shows the ripening results of evil deeds, such as the hell realms of beings, the great hell realms, the cold hells, the ephemeral hells, and other unfortunate realms, and one approaches and shows these. For those who have been born as humans, have committed evil deeds, and have accumulated unpleasant results, experiencing unbearable and extremely hot results individually, it is like this.
