There is no fault in not having a mind of affliction. Although wanting to abandon it, there is no fault in suppressing and engaging in it with pretense because of the intensity of afflictions. Regarding "elders" and so on. Not respecting the most elderly is a fault, because it is a dharma like a place of wrongdoing, due to falling away from the conduct of precepts that are strictly bound by the precepts. If a Bodhisattva sees a person who is very old and endowed with qualities, who is worthy of respect and in accordance with the Dharma, and does not show respect due to arrogance or anger, etc., and does not rise from his seat or offer a seat, it becomes a fault of affliction. Laziness and so on are not afflictions. There is no fault in being weak due to severe illness, being unusual, or having a disturbed mind. Regarding "asking" and so on. "Asking" is a close indication, and one should observe speaking universally and truly rejoicing. Answering is not giving an answer that is in accordance. This is also a close indication, and one should observe not speaking universally and not truly rejoicing again, because by the precepts of accomplishing the affairs of sentient beings, one falls away from protecting the minds of others, so not answering and so on are dharmas like places of wrongdoing. If a Bodhisattva, when others ask, speak universally, and truly rejoice, does not answer correctly due to arrogance, etc., does not speak universally, and does not truly rejoice, it becomes a fault of affliction. Laziness and so on are not afflictions. If he falls asleep, and others ask with the thought that "this will be awakened," speak universally, truly rejoice, teach the Dharma, listen to others teaching the Dharma and related talks, do not rejoice in talks of the Dharma, protect the internal precepts of the Sangha, and follow and protect the minds of many others, wanting to subdue them by this method, there is no fault. Regarding "invited as a guest" and so on, not considering the invitation as a guest as one's own, because it is like just having passed, so it is like a place of wrongdoing.

It is the discipline. If a Bodhisattva is invited to someone else's house or monastery, or to other houses and monasteries, for food, drink, clothing, etc., but does not accept due to pride, etc., this will become a fault with afflictions. Laziness, etc., are not with afflictions. If one is sick and unable, or wants to subdue with that method, or is begging for alms, or has previously promised others, or has not been invited due to hostile intentions, or the place is far away, or the road is full of dangers, or that Bodhisattva is not sincere but false, or because of continuous diligence in virtuous practices, it will be interrupted by that cause, or seeing that hearing the meaning of the Dharma, etc., which has not been heard before, will lead to deterioration, or protecting the monastic discipline, or protecting the minds of others, then there is no fault. Regarding the saying "gold, etc.," if someone offers gold, etc., not accepting it is a Dharma like a place of reproach because it is a retreat from being a companion of merit in the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. Truly accepting it is a special companion. If a Bodhisattva is offered gold, etc., by others but does not accept it due to pride, etc., it will become a fault with afflictions because it abandons sentient beings. If it is due to laziness, etc., it is not with afflictions. If one sees that accepting those things will make oneself attached, or doubts whether the donation is proper, or doubts that one will regret it, or doubts that the person will become poor because of it, or doubts that the donated object belongs to the Sangha or a stupa, or doubts that it was unreasonably taken from others, or because that reason will cause harm to that person, then there is no fault. Regarding the saying "for those who desire the Dharma," etc., not giving to those who seek the Dharma is a Dharma like a place of reproach because it is a retreat from accumulating virtuous Dharma and the perfection of generosity in benefiting sentient beings. If a Bodhisattva does not give the Dharma to those who truly approach the Dharma because of anger, jealousy, etc., this will become a fault with afflictions.
