These are teachings similar to the places of defeat for a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva who is extremely attached to gains and honor, praises himself and disparages others, this is the arising of a downfall that leads to defeat. A Bodhisattva, even if he has obtained gains, gives them to others, and also shows the secret teachings to others. How could attachment arise? Therefore, due to that reason, praising oneself and disparaging others is not the Dharma of a Bodhisattva, what need is there to say more? If one acts in order to wish the teachings to remain, to wish to subdue the heretics, to wish to tame them by that method, to raise them from the state of non-virtue and place them in the state of virtue, to make the non-believers believe, and to make the believers increase, there is no fault. Considering this very meaning, it will be explained in the end: "There is no fault in a virtuous mind, for it is endowed with compassion and love." For those who are suffering and without protection, etc., for those who are suffering, impoverished, without protection, and without refuge, who desire wealth and desire the Dharma, and who come to beg well, even though one has the objects to be given and possesses them, and even though one has obtained certainty about the Dharma, one is naturally endowed with miserliness, and is oppressed by the inability to bear others approaching, and does not give the things that should be given, such as wealth and the giving of the Dharma. Not giving is the second Dharma similar to the place of defeat, because one has fallen away from accomplishing the perfection of generosity through the vows of accumulating virtuous Dharmas and benefiting sentient beings. A Bodhisattva who has the objects to be given and is certain about the Dharmas, but is overwhelmed by great miserliness towards those who come seeking them well, and does not give wealth and Dharma, this is the arising of a downfall that leads to defeat. A Bodhisattva, if he knows those who want to deceive and manifestly want to, does not ask, but himself causes others to receive wealth, and constantly urges them to listen to the Dharma. How could there be a need and the

Although one is certain to possess, but is completely bound by stinginess, if one asks those who come seeking well, but does not give, this is not the Dharma of a Bodhisattva. Not giving because one does not have those enjoyments, and wanting to protect the precepts of the Sangha, wanting to subdue with a definite method, dissuading from non-virtuous places and placing them in virtuous places, being unhelpful and unexamined, being unhelpful and not dissuading, if that concerns the king, then there is no fault. Heretics seek opportunities, are disrespectful and shameless, and cause harm with bad conduct, Not accepting the Dharma, if one teaches the vast Dharma to those with dull faculties, they will be afraid and have wrong views, manifest wrong views and be attached to them, if one follows them, for others who are not vessels, the Dharma will increase and then decline, suspecting that it will cause harm, becoming unable to speak for oneself and lacking strength, if one wants to subdue those who do not enter this Dharma with that method, then there is no downfall. Regarding "others" and so on, due to the complete entanglement of anger, one beats other beings, striking with hands or feet or sticks. Inflicting various harms, inflicting various injuries, holding only the thought of anger in one's heart, for those who harm others, even if they confess or whip themselves, one does not listen and does not endure, and does not let go of the thought, this is because one has fallen away from the precepts of guarding and the precepts of accumulating virtuous Dharma, from tolerating the faults of others, so it is the third Dharma like a place of defeat. A Bodhisattva is overwhelmed by strong anger, even if the other person confesses well and whips themselves, one does not listen and does not endure and beats them, this is a downfall that will lead to defeat. A Bodhisattva, regarding the faults committed by others, if they are very strong and spread, one should also endure what should be done, regarding being separated from the place of attainment, one should generate great joy with a mind like painting, then, why accept anger in that way for such faults? Because one speaks harsh words and beats them and is shameless.
