Therefore. Therefore, there is not even a little bit of showing the suffering of being an only child here. Since it is like that, having vowed to completely protect all beings with compassion, then how should one accomplish it for oneself and others? Mentioning benefit and so on. Benefit means being without afflictions and without faults, therefore what ripens in the future is happiness. Happiness should be understood as being beneficial itself. These two should be done for oneself and others as well, because these two encompass everything. Suffering should be understood as being able to subdue. That suffering itself is also beneficial, if it can turn into happiness in the future, it must be done, just like bitter medicine, it is not without benefit. Whatever benefits someone, that for this person is actually happiness, because benefit is the cause of happiness. Whatever is not beneficial, that is, what ripens into suffering in the future, is like non-medicine, because it is afflicted and has faults, so even if it is happiness, it should not be done, because that has neither benefit nor happiness. Even if it is suffering, but if it is naturally agreeable, like unappetizing food and drink, then it is also beneficial. Even if it is happiness, but if it is slightly unbeneficial, it is also beneficial, like non-medicine, and naturally agreeable food and drink. Therefore, those who want to benefit themselves and others, for the things they desire, even if they are painful, should examine them separately, and if they are beneficial, they should do them. If it is happiness and not unbeneficial, it can also be done. Furthermore, if something is both beneficial, and is both happiness and suffering, and is not unbeneficial, then what is there to say about it? This is temporarily the brief conduct here. Furthermore, what are the downfalls and degenerations here? There are two types of downfalls: like a place of defeat, whatever dharma is fully practiced, will cause this vow to be abandoned, and will become a non-Bodhisattva; and the occurrence of transgressed downfalls, that is, by what one becomes a person with downfalls. Here there are also some downfalls that need to be confessed to others, that is: medium transgressions are confessed to three people, the rest are confessed in front of one person. It will be explained like this.

Some are those who guard themselves well, like not abandoning afflictions according to one's own mind. It will be taught in this way. Those downfalls, in the mother texts of the Bodhisattva Pitaka, how they are destroyed, and with what causes, have all been truly established. Therefore, wanting to show actions like the place of defeat, in order to show the name, the expressing words, and the basis, therefore "fierce afflictions" and so on are spoken. The four faults themselves of one who has obtained the Bodhisattva vows are considered to be like defeat, because those are what destroy the vows. Because they are overcome from the other side, these people will completely degenerate from the vows, so calling it "defeat" is a definitive term. It is similar to defeat only in the cause of destroying the vows, but it is not completely like a bhikshu. For example, if a bhikshu commits a defeat, he will become a non-bhikshu and no longer a shramana, and in this life there is no longer any chance to become a bhikshu. A Bodhisattva is not like that; this is merely abandoning the vows. In this very life, he still has the opportunity to take the vows correctly again; it will be taught that "the vows should be taken again." Furthermore, what are those that will destroy the vows? Therefore, "arising from fierce afflictions" and so on are spoken. Those who arise from fierce afflictions and have already arisen are like that, that is, from the place where afflictions are very prevalent, when those arise, the vows will be destroyed, and defeat will have been committed, and not otherwise. If any of these occur to a Bodhisattva, then in this life there will no longer be any opportunity to obtain a vast assembly of Bodhisattvas and so on, and to completely embrace them; if all of them are done, what need is there to say? In this life there is no opportunity for pure intention, because this is only pretending to be a Bodhisattva, and not a true Bodhisattva. Fierce afflictions are leaking out outflows, and continuously practicing them, yet this person knows shame.
