It is to guard, not to make others understand correctly, nor to compete with others, one should especially abide. Then, with what power does this ritual have, make offerings, drape a monastic robe over one shoulder, and with palms joined, pay homage with excellent intention to all Buddhas, World Honored Ones, and Bodhisattvas who have entered the great grounds, and manifest their qualities. Also, properly make offerings to the image of the Tathagata, and then say, "Please grant me the vows of a Bodhisattva," and receive them in this way. Afterwards, ask, "Have you made aspirations for Buddhahood? Do you wish to receive the foundation of the precepts of the Bodhisattva's discipline from me?" In this way, have them make a commitment three times, with confession of sins, taking refuge in the Three Jewels, generating the mind of enlightenment, and fully accumulating the accumulations of merit as preliminaries. In order to completely embrace and protect all beings, have them accumulate merit and have them engage in practices that are in accordance with the Great Vehicle. Then, in front of the image of the Tathagata, pay homage to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and report, "This person has properly received the body of the Bodhisattva's vows from me," and request that they be aware. Paying homage, making proper requests, aspirations, and taking vows, making them one's own and confessing sins, after doing so, taking refuge in the Three Jewels, and properly generating the mind of enlightenment, dedicating that virtue completely, and respectfully requesting the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and their retinues to be aware. This is the summarizing verse. After receiving the vows, do not proclaim them in the marketplace to those who are faithless and hateful, because all the great obscurations of ignorance, and being obscured by one side, will cause them to become distrustful. Just as it is shown to receive the vows from an external source, it is also said to receive them oneself. If there is no one who possesses those qualities, then the Bodhisattva should also receive the Bodhisattva vows himself in front of the image of the Tathagata.

One should properly take the vows of discipline, not from other vows, but only from others. Therefore, desiring more than abiding in other individual liberation vows, and engaging in taking the vows, a wise person should himself properly take the vows of the discipline of a Bodhisattva through the ritual of properly taking the vows of the discipline of a Bodhisattva. Other situations, such as restoring vows after they have been broken, and taking vows without respect, are not like that because they are not vessels, as stated before. If one possesses this discipline, is pure, and dwells in a solitary place, if he has no teacher, he can take it himself. This is a summary verse. For this complete act of taking vows, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas always pay attention to this in order to increase the merit of their virtuous minds. Moreover, seeing that the virtuous qualities here increase and do not diminish, they spoke of "at that time" and so on. At that time, that is, at the time of the completion of taking the vows, starting from that time, the virtuous minds only for the sake of becoming virtuous, therefore pay attention to this. "Constantly" means those who are capable and equal in virtue, until enlightenment, in the sense of not interrupting the continuity. At that time, because of having respect for benefiting oneself and others, therefore such an action, now is our action and has fruit, with extremely joyful minds, for the sake of this virtue, that is, for the sake of the increase of virtuous qualities, they pay attention, because that is what should be followed, so again do not fall into such a difficult situation, like a beloved son, they nourish with compassionate eyes. For example, just as parents always nurture a son who acts in accordance with their wishes and is pleasing to them, for the sake of benefit and happiness, hoping that nothing unpleasant will happen to him anywhere, they look with loving kindness, merely as an object of manifest attention.
