Therefore, this should be examined here. It is not merely a person's arbitrary will, because those wills are endless, and for those wills, it is extremely impossible to see everything completely. Therefore, the so-called "everything" refers to the five aggregates, the twelve sense bases, and the eighteen elements themselves, as well as all the wisdom arising from thought. Although there are many discourses on the Mahayana, I have extracted the meaning and words from some sutras, and the meaning from some sutras, and briefly explained some aspects. Here, the Blessed One, in order to prevent the beings to be tamed from completely degenerating, proclaimed the four reliances, namely: one should rely on the Dharma, not on the person; one should rely on the meaning, not on the words; one should rely on the sutras of definitive meaning, not on the sutras of provisional meaning; one should rely on wisdom, not on consciousness. Regarding the explanation of these, it is said in the Ornament of Sutras and others: The Dharma that is proclaimed is valid, not the (words) of those who refute. The meaning with hidden intention is valid, not the meaning of the words that do not reveal the intention and are merely according to the literal meaning. The meaning determined by the Tathagata and the Bodhisattvas recognized by the Tathagata is valid, not the wrong ideas of others. Wisdom is valid, not consciousness. Among them, wisdom is the wisdom that transcends the world, which is non-conceptual. Consciousness is the wisdom of worldly hearing, etc., which is conceptual wisdom. Among them, relying on the first reliance, one will not degenerate due to excessive attachment to Dharma and meaning. Relying on the second reliance is to discern the meaning with hidden intention through one's own intellect. Relying on the third reliance is to hear the non-inverted meaning from others. Relying on the fourth reliance is from the wisdom that transcends the world. The definitive meaning of the third reliance refers to the explanation that has been determined, and the provisional meaning refers to what should be explained, that is, the sutra.

The meaning of those (scriptures) should be understood according to (Buddha's) intention. It should not be understood literally, because these meanings need to be guided elsewhere, so it is a guided meaning. What is used to guide? By reason and the sutras that explain the ultimate meaning. For example, the *Meaning Fully Determined Sutra* says that external objects exist, and the *Lotus Sutra* says that there is only one vehicle, and so on. Because in other sutras, these are guided and determined to be other meanings. The Dharma of the Hearer Vehicle, which itself is of one taste with Suchness, is therefore also of the Great Vehicle. Therefore, the vehicle is one, as stated in the *Definitive Explanation of Intention*. In other sutras it is also said that some paths of the vehicle are the same in terms of selflessness, and liberation from the vehicle of result is the same, therefore, the vehicle is one, and so on. Although there are predictions for the Hearers there, this is also because those Hearers who become Bodhi are understood from guidance, otherwise, tranquility is one-sided, as stated in other sutras. In the sutras of ultimate meaning, it seems that the thoughts, habitual tendencies, special intentions, and various faculties of beings are spoken of, and therefore there are various lineages. Those lineages, according to their nature, practice the three vehicles and will touch the three Bodhis. Those without lineage, practicing good and non-good, will wander in samsara, just as melting iron, copper, and other lineages and non-lineage stones will only turn into iron, copper, silver, gold, and ashes. Even if all the Buddhas with power were to gather together, they would not guide those Hearers who are one-sidedly tranquil to manifest complete and perfect enlightenment, nor would they liberate beings without lineage from suffering. The meaning of those sutras, if the literal meaning is its meaning, that is the ultimate meaning. That meaning has no second meaning, this meaning is definite, and that is the ultimate meaning. What is used to determine the meaning? By that sutra itself and from that sutra...
