Because it is fully endowed with a mind of torment and abides in suffering. What is pride? There are seven types of pride: pride, great pride, pride beyond pride, conceit, arrogance, false pride, and wrong pride. The characteristic of all pride is the mental arrogance that arises from relying on the view of the aggregates of existence, and there is no difference in the characteristic of all pride. It is the basis for the action of generating disrespect. Disrespect is arrogance towards lamas and those with qualities. Speaking in terms of the specific characteristics, what is pride? Thinking that oneself is greater than someone smaller, or thinking that one is equal to someone equal, is mental arrogance, which is called pride. Thinking that one is greater, or thinking that one is equal to someone equal, mental arrogance in both cases is pride. What is great pride? Thinking that oneself is greater than someone equal, or thinking that one is equal to someone greater, is mental arrogance. Here too, thinking that oneself is superior to someone equal, or thinking that one is equal, mental arrogance in both cases is great pride. What is pride beyond pride? Thinking that one is greater than someone greater, is mental arrogance. If a layperson is greater than a monastic, and that layperson thinks, 'I am more superior than the monastic,' and becomes mentally arrogant, this is called pride beyond pride. What is conceit? It is the mental arrogance of truly seeing the five aggregates of clinging as self or belonging to self. Desire and craving for forms and so on are clinging, because desire takes the future body in the way of wanting, thus accomplishing the future aggregates. Craving takes the present body in the way of particularly clinging, thus not abandoning the present aggregates. Therefore, these two are called clinging. Those that are associated with these are the aggregates, so on those aggregates that are without self, thinking that there is a self, or thinking that they are my aggregates, that is conceit. What is arrogance? It is the mental arrogance of thinking that one has attained superior qualities that have not yet been attained.
