The characteristics of conditioned phenomena are birth, aging, abiding, and impermanence. Whatever is said about these is in terms of the conditioned phenomena that are called sentient beings, to show that they are not external objects. If both have birth and so on in common, then it is in terms of the conditioned phenomena that have been taken up. Why did the Blessed One explain the characteristics of conditioned phenomena? Because external form is distinguished by destruction and arising, while internal conditioned phenomena are distinguished by birth, aging, and so on. That is to say, in the world, the destruction and arising of external form are known as the sounds of destruction and arising, so the Blessed One also spoke in accordance with the world, but not as the sounds of birth and so on. Internal conditioned phenomena are distinguished by birth, aging, abiding, and decay, and the Blessed One also, in accordance with the world, showed the sounds of birth and so on in their arising and so on. What is the collection of names? The so-called 'conventional terms for the nature of things' is name because it makes the discriminating consciousness focus on what is to be said and what can be said. That is also the collection of letters that are applied to things, and the collection of names or letters is called the collection of names. Because the nature of things is unspeakable, the imputed words are called conventional terms. Nature is one's own characteristic. Although the own nature of things is unspeakable, the expression that clearly reveals one's own nature is called name, such as eye, ear, form, sound, and so on. What is the collection of phrases? The so-called 'conventional terms for the distinctions of things' is phrase because it is through it that the meaning of distinction is understood. In this way, phrase is distinguished from name and worldly language. Although name and phrase are both the nature of a collection of letters, they are distinguished by the difference in meaning. The conventional term for the nature of things is name, and the basis of distinction is nature, so the conventional term for nature was mentioned earlier.
