It should be combined with knowing. The ālaya-vijñāna is the place of its habitual tendencies, therefore it arises dwelling therein, it is a synonym called constantly arising. Or, in whatever realm, mind, the ālaya-vijñāna obtains the fruition, the afflicted mind also belongs to that realm and that ground, because it operates relying on the ālaya-vijñāna, therefore it arises dwelling therein. The so-called "with that as the object" means taking the ālaya-vijñāna itself as the object, because it is associated with the view of the perishable aggregate, etc., therefore the ālaya-vijñāna takes the self and what belongs to the self as the object. If what arises from the mind, how does it become its object? Although some do not think so, but at certain times, the mind-consciousness arising from the mind, that itself is the object, just like it arises. The so-called "mind"-consciousness, it is said that the mind-consciousness arises relying on the ālaya-vijñāna. The so-called "with that as the object, called mind", this can distinguish the ālaya-vijñāna from the operating consciousness. Someone also asks, what is its nature? The answer is "having the mind of self-grasping", saying this is because it is the nature of clinging to the self, therefore it is called mind in a definite word way. Because it is the nature of consciousness, so if it must be associated with mental factors, then what are the mental factors, how many, how long is the time, how long is the period of association with it, this cannot be known. Therefore, it is said that "unobscured and unspecified, always accompanied by four afflictions." There are two kinds of mental factors, namely afflictions and non-afflictions. In order to distinguish from non-afflictions, it is said that "afflictions." There are also six kinds of afflictions, but it is not associated with all afflictions, therefore it is said that "four." "Accompanied" means associated. There are also two kinds of afflictions, namely unwholesome and unobscured and unspecified. In order to distinguish from unwholesome, it is said that "unobscured and unspecified." The obscured consciousness is associated with unwholesome dharmas.

That is impossible, because being obscured is due to having afflictions. Undetermined is because good and non-good themselves cannot be determined. Constant means at all times, as long as it exists, it exists similarly with them. General indication shows the difference because it does not understand the distinction. View of self and ignorance of self, pride of self and attachment to self, are named thus. Seeing the aggregates of appropriation as self is the view of self, which is a synonym for the view of the perishable collection. Ignorance is not understanding, not understanding self is ignorance of self. Pride of self is having self-cherishing towards the object of self, which is a synonym for the pride of "I am". Attachment to self is attachment to self, which is a synonym for liking self. Among them, if one is ignorant of the self-nature of the Alaya-consciousness, then the view of self will arise towards the Alaya-consciousness. Whatever makes the mind arrogant with the view of self is the pride of "I am". If these three exist, then whatever manifests attachment to the object that is considered as self is attachment to self. Again it is said, ignorance and view of self, I am and pride, these four, make the Alaya-consciousness afflicted, it is the characteristic of arising self-cherishing, and also the cause of reversal, this mind is those afflicted ones. When the mind is virtuous or undetermined, it is always the cause of self-grasping. Ignorance of self and so on, those afflictions are also like the wish-fulfilling jewel at the ninth time. Here, in general, it is stated that it is not known whether it exists similarly with oneself, or whether it exists similarly with others. Therefore, it is said, "Where it arises, it is of that place." Where it arises is where it originates. "Of that place" means that in whatever realm and ground it arises, it exists similarly with that realm and that ground itself, and not with other realms and other grounds. Does it exist similarly only with those four afflictions? It is said no. However, it also exists similarly with other contacts and so on, it should be connected like this. The word "also" is the meaning of inclusion. Contact and so on refers to contact, attention, feeling, perception, and intention. These five dharmas are all-pervasive.
