Diligence and thorough suppression, as well as the difficulty in eradicating latent tendencies, are precisely due to the order. How does one destroy the path of the virtuous? For those on the side of householders, it is by transgressing the precepts of the ten virtuous actions and so forth, due to attachment and the power of self-will. How does one become the enemy of faith and wisdom, and the destroyer of discipline? For those on the side of renunciates, it is because of the previously accumulated defilements and the delusions here, in order to obstruct meditation, wisdom, and discipline, which is the order. Faith is where the mind abides, so it is meditation. How is virtue similar to the substance of the elements? Because it is the cause of happiness and suffering in this life and the next, and it is like wealth that completely protects. How is it destroyed by unwholesome objects? If one does not apply the mind properly, then from its opposing aspects, the obtained and unobtained virtuous dharmas completely decline, and the mind causes them to completely decline. Again, in brief, this shows that desires are difficult to fully understand, difficult to treat truthfully, not fully understood and not abandoned, and how they cause harm to whom. That is, one word, three words, and three additional words, which is the order. Another way of saying it is that desires are fully shown to be similar to thieves. Thieves accomplish their thieving acts through seven factors: having the nature of not being deceived; even if deceived, they do not retreat, thus they are revealed; they have no difficulty in going, coming, and suppressing others, thus they have strength; they roam far and densely in hidden and difficult-to-enter places; they rob completely, thus they have no compassion; they destroy when one is asleep and intoxicated, thus they know the timing; they are discordant and only interested in profit. Material desires, along with afflictive desires, are also similar to this. Among these, the nature of not being robbed indicates that it is difficult to understand, because the faults are not fully understood. Steadfastness

The very nature of being difficult to prevent is because it is difficult to remove. The very nature of possessing strength is because it is difficult to defeat an army, because it is difficult for pervasive wandering to abide. The very nature of wandering far and densely is because it is difficult to perceive the wandering, because the latent tendencies have entered far away and have disappeared. The very nature of lacking compassion is because of destroying the good path, etc., because it causes all virtues to disappear. The very nature of knowing the time is to destroy attachment like falling asleep, being drunk and intoxicated, and those who have the power of joy. The very nature of being incompatible is because the very nature of non-virtue is contrary to virtue. Like an oil lamp moved by the wind in a room, like a tree by the riverbank whose roots are shaking, like water leaking from a cracked container, this world is involuntarily subject to destruction. Since beings are thus thoroughly subject to destruction, why are you distracted from listening to the sacred Dharma? Why are these three examples shown from these sections? It is like this: what is called "beings" are name and form dominated by life, and the three postures of going, dwelling, and lying down. Therefore, just as impermanence is directed towards death, aging, and exhaustion, it is shown by the lamp, the tree, and the water. Furthermore, due to eight reasons, even diligent effort in this Dharma becomes futile: if one does not seek liberation, or because one is not free from illness, or because one is not independent, even if one seeks, one is unable to; even if one is able, there is no result without diligence; or because the agent is another; even if one is diligent, it is not certain to be accomplished; or one does not believe that one can accomplish it; or one does not know how to be diligent, lacking skillful means; or one has stopped breathing, having correctly crossed over from the lower realms. However, seeking, ability, and non-diligence, no result, no other agent, certain accomplishment and belief, and knowing the method but falling into error, those beings who dwell on the edge, if they do not exert themselves greatly, they are certainly obscured by sinful actions and show much suffering. Hear about the lower realms.
