There are three: those born from attachment, those born from hatred, and those born from ignorance. Likewise, even up to wrong views, this is how the characteristics of the paths of non-virtuous actions are generally established. Therefore, how can it be accomplished without fault? In the Sutra of Skillful Means, it is taught that killing arising from non-attachment, etc., is faultless. How can that be the same as this? How does it arise from non-attachment, etc.? If one sees another about to commit an action with no interval, knowing that the result of that action will ripen intensely over a long period, and out of compassion, even accepting to be born in the hells in order to save that being, one generates a state of mind that is virtuous or neutral, thinking, 'It is not right for me to be born in the hells and be associated with great suffering,' and then kills that being. Such an action arises from a virtuous mind. In this way, a virtuous mind is also endowed with non-attachment, etc. However, if killing arising from non-attachment, etc., still becomes a fault, then harsh speech, divisive speech, and the sutras that speak of them would also become faults. Is the mind that completely abandons that not hatred here? Because one desires to completely save that being from the great river of suffering, loving that being even more than oneself, when one sees that being's body about to commit an action that will certainly cause suffering, thereby obtaining an excellent body, what is being abandoned now? Furthermore, by what action of those who possess compassion is killing another for their benefit faulty? For what reason are the sixty monks, etc., and the two sutras taught by the Subduer reasonable? In which of the two sutras is this Dharma category explained? It is said that warm blood flowed from the mouths of the sixty monks, and they died from that harm, like a pile of trees. And from where did the Blessed One say to the monks, 'Monks, meditate on the unattractive! Practice the unattractive!'

From the term "repulsive" to "great benefits," one cultivates the impure, and the praises of meditating on the impure are explained. At that time, the monks meditated on the impure. When they meditated on the impure, from "loathing this body of pus" to "stabbing with a knife," even to the point where monks killed monks, this is the Sutra of Taming Wild Beasts. Why is it that in the Mahayana it is taught that the emanation Shakyamuni is an emanation of the Buddha, but in the non-Mahayana it is said that it is not? Because Bodhisattvas have faith in the vast, in order to show them the nature of the Buddha and the qualities of great power, it should be taught in the same way as the Sutra of the Birth of the Tathagata. Otherwise, they would not apply their minds in this way, and it would become unreasonable. If it were said that way, how would one answer? Those Shravakas who have the fortune to have faith in such things will hear it from that very source. But for those who do not have the fortune, teaching it would become a fault. Therefore, saying that the Mahayana is the word of the Buddha is not contradictory. So, saying that the extremely vast category is the Mahayana is not contradictory. This is the fourth chapter of the Reasoning of Distinguishing Explanations. It also shows the manner of debate and response, and also shows the reasoning of how to explain the Sutras. Furthermore, the Dharma speaker should first present the Sutras and then debate and examine them, in order to generate desire in the audience. However, for those who have little desire, in order to make them listen, one should explain with reverence and listening. What is reverence and listening? It is from what speech reverence and listening are shown. If one listens, one should explain the Sutras in order of necessity and so on. Even if debate and examination have been done, why is debate mentioned? It is in order to easily understand the answers after the debate is over. Previously it was said, "If one hears the greatness of the Sutras, for listening and holding, the listener will become respectful, therefore one should first state the necessity." Since that is the case, why should one first listen with reverence?
