Etc., are shown as the fruit itself. Having made it subject to the power of habit, he mentioned things like, "What is this called habit?" By what corresponding dharma is it called habit? What is that habit? This is the meaning of two questions. The ālaya-vijñāna to be perfumed, having arisen and ceased together with the dharmas that perfume it, those dharmas that perfume it become the cause for future arising, that is habit. For example, in the world, sesame seeds meet with flowers, and relying on arising and ceasing together, it becomes the cause for the arising of a scent similar to it. Or, for example, with respect to treatises, the mind that arises and ceases together with things like desire, which are in accordance with the side of all afflictions, and things like mindfulness and wisdom, which are in accordance with the side of complete purification, gathered by much hearing, becomes the cause for the arising of things similar to those minds, that is like habit. Here also, if one denies the very thing to be perfumed and the thing that perfumes with respect to the distinctions of moments, it will lead to annihilation, therefore, one establishes the ālaya-vijñāna itself as a continuous mode. With respect to the mind that possesses similarity to its own aggregate, one allows the other party to accept habit, and says that they arise and cease together. The statement that it is the very cause of arising is the answer to the second question. By the very correspondence of the thing that perfumes, it is called habit, implying that this is also the answer to the first question. There are three discriminations with respect to this: Some say that habit does not depend on the thing that perfumes, but rather, with respect to the place of the nature of dharmas, things like desire, etc., arising and ceasing together are merely nourishing, but not producing. That is so, because if it is like this, the very cause of the arising of the ālaya-vijñāna and the noble path is the natural lineage, if one accepts that the condition of the cause is habit, then those arising and ceasing together cannot produce their own habit, because the two ālaya-vijñānas will not meet, and also the noble path is not familiar. Nourishing will also become different, that is not

It is contradictory. Others, like sesame seeds, rely on habits as obstacles, and after seeing them as obstacles, they give rise to things that were previously non-existent, and as obstacles, they also want to fully restore things that were previously born. Because the mind consciousness that focuses on the internal birth place is similar to the ālaya-vijñāna (藏文:ཀུན་གཞིའི་རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་,梵文天城体:आलयविज्ञान,梵文罗马拟音:ālayavijñāna,汉语字面意思:阿赖耶识) that belongs to its category in terms of object of focus, it is also thought that in order to generate the ālaya-vijñāna, habits become the cause and condition for generation. The lineage of the noble path is not the nature of the uncontaminated path, but in the continuum in which the seeds of afflictions and cognitive obscurations are thin and can be abandoned, that is the lineage of the Bodhisattva. In the continuum in which the seeds of afflictive obscurations exist, that is the lineage of the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas. In the continuum in which the seeds of both are strong and cannot be abandoned, that is the lineage of those without lineage. The first moment of the noble path has no co-emergent cause. The reason for saying "causal basis" is because it is spoken of as it is possible. Others say that habits abide by their own nature, and must be fully restored and also give rise to things that were previously non-existent. Many habits that arise are the nature of the cause of co-emergence, and are the co-emergent condition of the owner of the habit. Any habit of nature, and many habits that give rise to things that were previously non-existent, are also thought to be the co-emergent cause of the arising of the fruit of the same moment, like the common cause examined by the Vaibhāṣikas. In this regard, the first conceptual thought needs to be discussed. Attachment and so on only abide in complete restoration, so they cannot be established as co-emergent causes. For example, in the statement "conditioned by actions, consciousness," actions are what completely restore the seed of consciousness, so it is like a co-emergent condition. Then, what kind of condition is the second branch of the twelve links of dependent origination? Because the sūtra says "co-emergent condition." Therefore, just as the ālaya-vijñāna is, so also are the defiled dharmas co-emergent causes, which contradicts the above view. It is not so, because of the seeds of the same kind.
