That which is called "never changing" is the same as equanimity, because there is no inconsistency. Like this, these aggregates of suffering, even if they exist countless times, one thinks, "How good it would be if they didn't exist." But one doesn't think, "How good it would be if there were no self," because there is no antidote to the view of self, and because it is the same as the afflicted mind, attachment is also connected to this. Furthermore, if the result of unwholesome actions is neither pleasant nor painful, then what kind of feeling is it? It is not, because here there is nothing like the view of pleasure. Here, pleasure and joy are born from the maturation of wholesome actions, and pain and displeasure are born from the maturation of unwholesome actions. Neither pleasure nor pain is born from the maturation of both. That which is born from the maturation of unwholesome actions is not the nature of unwholesomeness, but because it is not clear, the afflicted mind may be connected to it. The explanation of terms is complete. Now is the time to establish the characteristics separately. Here also, seven things are arranged closely: characteristic, habit, its suchness, otherness, the nature of mutual causality, diversity and non-diversity, and dependent origination, the separate establishment of causes. All of these are incidental to the characteristic, therefore they are separately established as characteristics. After mastering the first thing, then it is said how to separately establish the characteristic of this. In short, it is like collecting from extensive differentiation. Among them, regarding self-nature, some say that whatever has an immature seed of cause and a fully mature seed, that is the seed of dependent origination dependent on others, because dependence on others is the result. Because it is said that it is the nature of birth, that is not reasonable, because immaturity is not the cause of birth. Some say that the self-nature of dependent origination dependent on others is that of the result.

If one considers the seed as the cause, then it is said to be the result in relation to the dharma that acts as a door. But that is not reasonable, because it is said that "that is the very nature of the cause of arising," and because it is said that "it arises dependent on habit." Therefore, without making a distinction between fully ripened and not fully ripened, the seed aspect and the fully ripened aspect are combined and called self-nature, because it is said that "all fully ripened seeds," and because it is said below that, in short, it is called the alaya-consciousness and so on. That very thing is shown by "the self-nature of the alaya-consciousness is" and so on. The phrase "dependent on habit" means that it arises from here, which explains that the fully ripened aspect arises in dependence. The phrase "that is the very nature of the cause of arising" means that it is the very nature of the cause of the arising of all those afflicted dharmas. And how is it the nature of the cause? It is said, "because it possesses the complete holding of the seed." This is for the purpose of analyzing the chief thing and so on. In this way, possessing the complete holding of the seed means that those who possess arising, together with arising and ceasing, hold the habit completely. This shows the seed aspect. Among them, the habits of all afflictions are these: the habit of expression, the habit of the limb of existence, and the habit of the view of the aggregates. The habit of expression is the condition of the cause, because it is the cause of the manifestation of the self-nature of the alaya-consciousness. The habit of the limb of existence is the condition of the lord, because it is the cause of transforming into good and bad destinies. The habit of the view of the aggregates is also the condition of the lord, because it is the cause of distinguishing between self and other. If it were not so, all sentient beings would become one. After distinguishing the seed aspect, the nature of the cause is shown by "those very afflicted dharmas themselves" and so on. The fully ripened aspect is also what is called the alaya-consciousness.
