, and by seeking its own nature and the many, and by practicing as it is, one attains peace, and peace is attained through confession. A bhikṣu who is diligent in the discipline of the Vinaya has five things to be fully understood. What are the five? They are: things to be fully understood, offenses to be fully understood, persons to be fully understood, possessions to be fully understood, and harms to be fully understood. Among these, what are the things to be fully understood? They are the five aggregates of things, etc., as taught in the Hearer's Ground. Furthermore, to summarize, there are two kinds of things: those that are shown as sentient beings and those that are not shown as sentient beings. What are the offenses to be fully understood? A bhikṣu who is diligent in the discipline of the Vinaya should fully understand offenses in five ways: basis, motivation, object, action, and limit. Among these, offenses to be fully understood from the basis are those that arise from the basis of desire or the basis of hatred. From the motivation, there are offenses that are motivated by the body but not by speech or mind. There are offenses that are motivated by speech but not by body or mind. There are offenses that are motivated by mind but not by body or speech. There are offenses that are motivated by both body and speech but not by mind. There are offenses that are motivated by both speech and mind but not by body. There are offenses that are motivated by both body and speech but not by mind. There are offenses that are motivated by both speech and mind but not by body. There are offenses that are motivated by body, speech, and mind. Offenses that are motivated solely by the mind and must be confessed in front of others are only to be restrained by their very nature of not being motivated. How should they be restrained? For example, a bhikṣu engages in thoughts of desire, etc., which are unwholesome thoughts. From the object, to summarize, there are two kinds of objects: those that are counted as sentient beings and those that are not counted as sentient beings.

Furthermore, actions are of two kinds: actions that should not be done, and actions of not doing what should be done. Completion refers to going to the very end from where it began, without turning back in between. Therefore, its downfall will be completely fulfilled. The downfall of gross offenses arises from the actions of committing fundamental vows and remaining Sangha. Downfalls and misdeeds arise from the complete fulfillment of those actions and their respective categories. Misdeeds arise from the actions of downfall. Among them, the remaining downfall refers to the four categories of downfall. The non-remaining refers to the fundamental vows. Done means having been done correctly. Not done means the opposite of that. Spoken means having been publicly confessed in accordance with the Dharma in front of others. Not spoken means the opposite of that. Thought means that after confession, the misdeed has been blessed and purified. Not thought means the opposite of that. Enacted refers to the distinctions made by the Bhagavan in the Pratimoksha and the Vinaya regarding downfall. Not enacted means the opposite of that. Prohibited refers to what was enacted without initially making a general rule for one person or one time, but was previously enacted without distinction. Non-general prohibition should be understood from the opposite of that. Among these, to fully understand a person, one can understand through five ways: the difference of examination, the difference of lineage, the difference of high and low, the difference of attainment, and the difference of observation. Among them, the difference of examination should be understood as explained in the Hearer Ground. The difference of lineage should also be understood as the difference of the seven lineages such as monks and nuns. Among them, the difference of high and low is that some people are born of noble families, ordained from wealthy families, and are handsome; while others are not like that. Fully understanding in this way is called fully understanding the difference of high and low. The difference of attainment is from the beginning of faith-following up to the seventeen stages between the final stage of liberation from the two parts, and from the stage of entering the stream for the sake of the fruit of entering the stream.
